People living in the Highlands who are thinking of a career change to Primary teaching are being urged by The Highland Council to consider a distance learning course (DLITE) with the University of Aberdeen.
Training for the Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Education DLITE (Distance Learning ITE) starts on 20 January 2018 and the deadline for applications is 21 August 2017.
Bill Alexander, Director of The Highland Council's Care and Learning Service said: "This successful partnership that we have with the University of Aberdeen is an excellent way for people to take up teaching without having to leave their home area. The part time distance learning can be done from home with a placement in the local area, enabling people to train without having to uproot their lives to study elsewhere.
"Like many other local authorities across Scotland we are facing challenges in recruiting enough people into teaching. The DLITE course is allowing us to ‘home-grow' new teaching talent from within our local area. I encourage anyone with an interest in teaching to consider this fantastic opportunity."
The DLITE PGDE (Primary) is a part-time, distance learning, 18 month programme of study (120 credits), which includes 18 weeks of placement experience in Primary Schools within the Highland Council area. The course includes: E-Learning, face-to-face workshops (eight Saturday ‘Network’ days), self-study, collaborative group work, and professional practice on placement, to develop the academic, personal, and professional skills suitable for entry into the teaching profession.
The programme involves set courses which include:
Developing Professional Practice 1 & 2: Professional Studies / Learning & Teaching through the Primary Curriculum / Professional Enquiry.
School Experience: 18 weeks of full-time placement over the duration of the programme
Applications are invited from appropriately qualified individuals living in the Highland Council area. Entry requirements for the course are as follows:
Graduate with relevant experience in working with young people (formally or informally);
Higher English at Grade C or above or equivalent;
Mathematics National 5 at Grade C or above, Standard Grade at Grade 2 or above, Intermediate 2 at Grade C or above, or equivalent;
Competent ICT skills appropriate for engaging in online distance learning.
