Highland toilets to remain open until review complete

The process of carrying out a review of public toilet provision in The Highland Council area is underway and is due for completion by the end of October this year.

Meanwhile, during the summer tourist season Highland Council toilets will remain open until the end of October.

Highland Council's Administration Leadership have previously explained that they are listening to feedback from communities across the Highlands and have decided to take more time to rationalise sustainable toilet provision in the Highlands.

Cllr Allan Henderson chair of Environment, Development and Infrastructure said: "There is no quick fix model, its takes time for realisation, ideas and solutions to be found and by working with local communities hopefully we can see a long term sustainable future for public toilet provision in the region.

"In view of serious community proposals coming forward and being assessed, by groups such as North Coast 500 and others across the Highlands, through the Rural Tourism Infrastructure Fund, we are allowing extra time for the review which has been extended to 31st October, to ensure we have a sustainable network of toilets across the Highlands.

“The Administration is also looking at ways of creating a council loan fund to help communities with conversion to community ownership."

Cllr Henderson, added: “This is about working with communities and potential Highland Comfort Scheme providers to enable a different public toilet delivery model that is sustainable and affordable in local communities."

Still time to return Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Community Council election ballots

Anyone eligible to vote in the contested Latheron, Lybster and Clyth Community Council election is reminded that their postal ballot papers need to be completed and returned in the pre-paid envelope provided by 12 noon on Thursday, 8 October 2026.   Candidates standing were invited to submit a statement to support their candidacy and these statements are provided in the envelopes mailed out along with the ballot papers to all eligible voters.

Highland Council proceeds to procurement for a new electric Corran Ferry

The Highland Council has reached another significant milestone in the delivery of a replacement Corran Ferry, with the procurement for a new electric vessel.   Funded through a £58 million investment from the Inverness and Highland City-Region Deal, including £28 million from the Scottish Government for the new electric vessel, £20 million from the UK Government and £10 million from The Highland Council towards landside infrastructure, the project will deliver a modern replacement ferry service for one of Scotland's busiest single-vessel crossings.
