Scientists from Thurso’s Environmental Research Institute are reaching out to the art community in Caithness. Artists and designers of all disciplines are being given the opportunity to display their work and interact with the scientific community at a forthcoming conference in Thurso dedicated to research in the Flow Country.
Last year a group of Wick High School pupils won an award for creating great new app for your phone. It will cut down on paper work for farmers.
Thurso High School, which was damaged on Christmas Eve during a storm, is to reopen to all pupils and staff on Monday 6 January On 24 December a large section of the roof of the 802 pupil school was blown off during high winds. The school was closed for the Christmas holidays at the time and no one was injured but some damage was reported to private cars in the neighbouring area.
A large section of Thurso High School roof has been blown off with the high winds. Police and Highland Council staff are in attendance and Ormlie Road has been closed.
The Highland Council has appointed Mr Ken Murphy, to the post of Head Teacher of the 804-pupil Thurso High School. Mr Murphy, who has been the Acting Head Teacher since August of this year, succeeds Dr Fiona Grant, who has reverted to a teaching post at the school.

Since opening in 2000, the ERI has become a dynamic research organisation with a young, highlymotivated team, and the ethos of multi- and inter-disciplinarity is securely embedded. Today, the ERI has become a focus for promoting excellence in research in the region, largely due to the ability of its investigators to work with stakeholder, commercial, academic and educational organisations alike.
A week long summer school was held in late July for students of Thurso, Wick and Farr High School students in 4th, 5th & 6th years to prepare them for the world of work. The course, organised by DSRL (Dounreay Site restoratiopn Ltd) on behalf of the NDA (Nuclear Decommissioning Agency), was supported by North Highland College and Skills Development Scotland.
The new acting head teacher of Thurso High School will be Mr Ken Murphy, who is currently Depute Head Teacher at the school. He has been appointed as Acting Head Teacher, pending re-advertisement of post, and the appointment of a permanent Head Teacher.
Jenna Forbes (21) from Westerdale beat off strong competition to win £1000 prize money for the Best Student Idea in the UHI Business Ideas competition recently held in Inverness. Jenna, an HNC Business student at The North Highland College UHI pitched her idea to the judging panel at Inverness College UHI’s Longman Campus.
Thurso High School will have a new acting head teacher when pupils return from their October holidays. John McGilp, Head Teacher at Kinlochleven High School, is moving to Thurso High School as Acting Head Teacher until the end of the school session in June, next year.
WICK HIGH SCHOOL LAUNCHES INNOVATIVE ONLINE REWARDS SCHEME IN SCOTLAND. Wick High School is the first school in Scotland to sign up to Vivo Miles, the award winning online rewards system for secondary school students.

First Minister Alex Salmond officially opened two new energy education hubs at The North Highland College UHI on Thursday 30th August 2012. The First Minister met with staff, students and trainees at the official opening of North Highland College UHI's new Engineering, Technology and Energy Centre (ETEC) and Centre for Energy and Environment (CfEE).
Wick High School Computing Science department is the first in Scotland to be selected as a certified partner with Apps for Good, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to encourage young people to use technology to tackle problems for social good. The new third year cohort of 55 students will be working with industry experts throughout the year to research, build and market apps on the android mobile platform using App Inventor and will then, if selected, take part in a national competition where the winning teams will work with professional developers to re-launch their app and potentially make some money for the school.
(By Saul Stevens 1S4) On the 17th of May 2012 Thurso High School held a coffee afternoon in the canteen for an hour after school, which was run by first year pupils. The coffee afternoon revolved around Fairtrade, which aims to ensure a fair amount of money goes to the producers from developing countries and their communities, so they can have access to schools and healthcare.

An award winning mural designed by North Primary School promoting recycling has been used to create eye-catching banners which will be on display at the Council's Recycling Centres at Wick and Seater. The Recycling Mural competition, run by the Council's Waste Aware Team, proved to be very popular with 55 primary schools submitting a total of 119 entries, with a wide array of styles and ideas.
The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) contributes £191m every year to the Scottish economy and supports 3,300 full time jobs, according to a new independent economic impact assessment. Scotland's newest university also helps to sustain a further contribution of £202m every year and 2,700 jobs through the further education provision of the 13 academic partners and research institutions in the partnership.
