The Case For A £15/hour Minimum Wage

A report makes the case for a £15/hour minimum wage by 2024 to compensate employees for a "lost decade" of wages.   14 million people would see an increase in pay under proposals to increase the minimum wage to £15/hour, according to new research by James Meadway and Howard Reed for the Progressive Economy Forum (PEF).

Committee Approves Conservation And Management Plan For Thurso

Members of The Highland Council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee have approved the Thurso Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan, to help safeguard the distinct architectural and historical features of the town.   Following public consultation and discussions with local Councillors at the Caithness Area Committee, the boundary of the Conservation Area has been amended so that it more accurately reflects Thurso's special architectural and historic importance.

The Dangerous Fiction of the "Fiscal Black Hole"

New research, published today by the Progressive Economy Forum, shows that the widely- reported £50bn "hole" in the public finances, is the result of government accountancy rules and highly uncertain forecasts, not tax or spending decisions.   Using official forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility, economists Dr Jo Michell and Dr Rob Calvert Jump show that small changes in forecasts for future interest rates and growth, and what is counted as government debt, dramatically alter the size of the apparent "hole" in the public finances.

GDP Monthly Estimate UK September 2022

Gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have fallen by 0.6% in September 2022, after a fall of 0.1% in August 2022 (revised from a fall of 0.3% in our previous publication) driven by a fall in the services sector.   Looking at the quarterly picture, GDP fell by 0.2% in the three months to September 2022 compared with the three months to June 2022.

Index Of Production UK September 2022 - Monthly Production Output Rose By 0.2%

Movements in the volume of production for UK production industries: manufacturing, mining, and quarrying, energy supply and water and waste management.   Monthly production output rose by 0.2% between August and September 2022 and is now 0.3% above February 2020, which was the last month of "normal" trading conditions before the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

GDP Fall Lower Than Expected But Recession Is Here

The first quarterly estimate of UK gross domestic product (GDP) shows an estimated fall of 0.2% in Quarter 3 (July to Sept) 2022.   Monthly estimates published today (11 November 2022) show that GDP fell by 0.6% in September 2022 which was affected by the bank holiday for the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, where some businesses closed or operated differently on this day.

Highland Council Members Green-light Development Of Transport Scheme For Ukrainian Displaced Persons

Members of the Economy and Infrastructure Committee on 10th November 2022 agreed a proposal for the creation and development of a transport assistance scheme for Ukrainian Displaced Persons.   Chair of the Economy and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Ken Gowans, said: "Today's agreement follows a successful motion to full Council in September 2022, which sought to investigate the feasibility and cost of offering a transport scheme to those now residing in Highland who have been affected by the crisis in Ukraine.".
