Joint Administration Agreed By Highland Council

The Highland Council has agreed the formation of a joint Administration between the Scottish National Party (SNP) Group and the Highland Independent Group.   Senior Office Bearers were also agreed.

Rishi Sunak's £15 Billion Cost-of-living Package And Windfall Tax: Four Experts Respond

Rishi Sunak, the UK chancellor of the exchequer, has unveiled a £15 billion package of measures to help households with the cost of living, after energy watchdog Ofgem announced it would probably be increasing the price cap on energy bills by over £800 a year to £2,800 in October.   Picking up part of the tab is oil and gas companies, with a temporary windfall tax that is expected to bring in about £5 billion.

New Council Leader welcomes game-changing opportunity for Highland

The new Leader of Highland Council, Raymond Bremner has indicated that the economy will be a key focus for the Council as he welcomed the announcement that thousands of jobs would be created by an Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport.   He responded to the initial research published today by Opportunity Cromarty Firth and Biggar Economics which said winning the Freeport bid would stimulate manufacturing, creating thousands of jobs, and revolutionise the Highland economy.

Defuelling Of UK's Hunterston B NPP Begins

Workers have started removing used nuclear fuel from the reactors at the UK's Hunterston B NPP in Scotland, EDF Energy said.  The station stopped generating electricity in January.

Urgent Action Needed On Cost Of Living - Calls For £30 Billion Support Package

Households and businesses are struggling to cope with the cost of living crisis and need urgent action from the UK Government, according to Finance Secretary Kate Forbes.   With inflation reaching a 40 year high of 9 per cent, and forecast to rise higher, Ms Forbes has written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer urging the UK Government to use the £30 billion fiscal headroom it has available to help those struggling in the face of rising bills.

A Highland led Lyme Disease initiative has been given the go ahead to roll-out across Scotland and England.  The GP based scheme is a collaboration between NHS Highland, Scotland's Rural College (SRUC) and Pfizer Inc.

Britain close to ‘eliminating' low pay but must now confront wider challenges of inadequate hours, insecure work, and invasive self-employment

The share of low-paid employees has fallen to a record low and is on track to be ‘eliminated' by 2024.  Britain must now turn to tackling the new frontiers of low pay in the 2020s - including inadequate hours, insecure work and the spread of low-earning self-employment, according to new research published today.(Wednesday 25 May 2022).

Are Retail Jobs In Crisis Because Of A Digital Skills Gap?

Ahead of their event, Accelerate 2022, British Retail Consortium's Learning's Director, Lucy Crowther, spoke to FutureDotNow about the retail industry's digital skills gap.   "Many people coming into the retail workforce for the first time are lacking digital skills, either because they've never been taught or they're nervous when asked to interact with technology in a different way." Commenting on the latest ONS inflation data, Julian Jessop, Economics Fellow at free market think tank the Institute of Economic Affairs, said, "The jump in consumer price inflation to 9 per cent in April was not quite as bad as some had feared.   The soaring cost of living is still extremely worrying.

High Costs Hurting Households And Retailers

Responding to the latest ONS Retail Sales Index figures, Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium, said: "Retail sales are being squeezed by a combination of low demand, high inflation and rising costs.  The fall in demand comes as consumers reign in their discretionary spending following a significant reduction to real incomes for households across the UK.
