Job Losses Likely At Highland Airports As Plans Move Forward

Wick John O'Groats airports one of the airports that would be downgraded and cameras installed to be controlled from New Century House in Inverness Highlands and Islands, Airports Ltd has announced air traffic control for five Scottish regional airports is to be undertaken centrally from Inverness, The change will involve Sumburgh, Dundee, Inverness, Kirkwall and Stornoway.   The move is in order to modernise with much more computer control and camera systems at the airports.

Storm damage takes its toll on Highland roads

Storm Brendan has taken its toll on roads and infrastructure across the Highlands.   Localised flooding, wind and ice has caused damage to roads, paths, car parks and walls in numerous areas including Applecross, Lochaber and Caithness and Sutherland.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts, (January, 16 th ) sold 2,723 sheep of all classes.   Lambs (1,761) averaged £68.06 and sold to £107 for a Rouge from Woodside, Muir of Tarradale.

170,000 Children Eligible For New Benefit

Applications will be taken in advance for Scottish Child Payment to help with expected high demand.   An estimated 170,000 children will be eligible for the new £10 weekly Scottish Child Payment when it goes live later this year.

MSPs Press The Case For Women's Custody Facility In The North

Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, David Stewart, questioned the Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Humza Yousaf, in Parliament today about facilities for women prisoners from the Highlands and Islands and Moray.   During Portfolio Questions, Mr Stewart asked the Cabinet Secretary what plans the Scottish Government has for a new women's community integration unit in the Highlands and Islands.

Uniform Business Rate Reforms

Public Finance Minister Kate Forbes has replied to a letter from the Scottish business community highlighting the Scottish Government's support for maintaining the Uniform Business Rate.   In the letter she echoed concerns that the amendment to devolve control of rates to local authorities would create risk and uncertainty for both ratepayers and local authorities.

Flybe's franchise partner Eastern Airways has flights to Wick from Aberdeen and would have been in danger if the company had gone bust.   Flybe has agreed £110m rescue deal.

Highlands and Islands Enterprise Look To Hi-tech To Improve Fish Industry

The transnational project, called ‘DisruptAqua', is worth €155,000 and is being supported by the European Union's Northern Periphery and Arctic Programme (NPA) 2014-2020.   As the demand for fish is increasing, the innovative use of existing and new technologies is required.

Less Favoured Area Support - Investment For Remote Rural Areas Underway

Loan payments are now being issued to provide financial support to hill farmers and crofters in some of Scotland's most remote and marginalised areas.   Under the first tranche of the Less Favoured Area Support Loan Scheme payments, more than 7,500 eligible hill farmers and crofters will receive loans of up to 95% of their 2019 payment - more than the 90% offered last year.

Local Government Funding Is Not Keeping Up With Needs Say COSLA

The Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) has launched a campaign to persuade the Finance Secretary Derek Mackay MSP to invest in Scotland's councils before it is too late.  COSLA has produced a briefing document Invest in Essential Services which clearly shows the reduction to Local Government funding since 2013/14 and how the flexibility councils have to spend their budget has been eroded by the Scottish Government.

Electric start to 2020 as Menzies Distribution brings zero-emissions fleet to Scotland

Menzies Distribution is hailing an electric start to 2020 as it unveils expansion of its zero-emissions delivery fleet to Scotland.   The company already has the UK's largest all electric vehicle fleet as well as the largest commercial charging infrastructure in the UK through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Gnewt, delivering parcels across London.
