Operation Respect - Metal Detection System

Operation Respect is an ongoing multi-agency partnership initiative which aims to reduce street violence, disorder and incidents linked to licensed premises.  Working with key partners in order to make our streets safer and to reduce the risk to the public.

Thousands more Highland homes in line for superfast broadband

More than 15,000 homes and businesses across Highland will benefit from the next phase of fibre broadband roll-out, as part of the £146m Digital Highlands and Islands project.   Work over the next six months will bring next generation broadband to 15 new communities in the Highlands and Islands, and roll-out is extending into Caithness for the first time.

Police Scotland welcomes nineteen new recruits to Highland and Islands Division

As of Friday 10 October 2014, nineteen new Police Scotland recruits will be completing their final week of training at the Highland and Islands Division Police Headquarters in Inverness.  The recruits have spent 12 weeks at the Scottish Police College in Tulliallan, undertaking intense training in variety of areas including learning general policing duties, legislation, traffic management and undertaking physical fitness assessment.

Dounreay PFR sodium fire

At around 01:30hrs on Wednesday 7th october 2014 there was a small fire in the PFR sodium tank farm.   The Dounreay Fire Brigade was called immediately and the area was made safe.

Radioactive Concrete Cargo Incident Near Wick

Council renews call for permanent reinstatement of ETVs.   Leader of The Highland Council, Councillor Drew Hendry has renewed The Highland Council's call to permanently retain and reinstate previous levels of emergency towing vehicles (ETVs) covering the Minch and Northern Isles.

Personal Licence holders still to notify Board of training

Members of The Highland Council's Licensing Board were (October 7, 2014) informed that 811 Personal Licence holders have still to notify the Board that they have completed their refresher training.   Personal Licence holders had until the 31 August to sit their training.

The Caithness Solution - supply chain opportunities

The Caithness & North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership (CNSRP) is organising an event to allow companies to better understand the Investment and Supply Chain opportunities in the Caithness area.   This one day programme is suitable for Oil & Gas companies who either need capacity for servicing West of Shetland / Atlantic Frontier opportunities, or want to explore the excellent skills base in the area.

Buying cigarettes for children could cost you a packet

A poster campaign to highlight the risks of buying cigarettes for children has been launched by the Trading Standards services in Highland and Argyll and Bute Councils, in partnership with NHS Highland.   The campaign aims to increase awareness that it is unlawful for adults aged 18 or over, to knowingly buy or attempt to buy cigarettes, tobacco or cigarette papers for a person who is under the age of 18, this is known as a "proxy purchase".

Councillor Praises Highland Residents For Recycling Figures

The Highland Council recycling rate has reached 45% pushing it up to number 11 in the rankings of the 32 Scottish Local Authorities according to new figures released by SEPA (Scottish Environmental Protection Agency) for 2013.   Councillor Graham MacKenzie, Chair of the Council's Community Services Committee, said: "These latest figures are great news and testament to the commitment of Highland residents to recycling.

Bank of Scotland Makes Winter a Little Warmer With £500 Towards Heating Costs

Bank of Scotland is offering First Time Buyers £500 towards their heating costs when they take out a qualifying mortgage product before 17th November 2014.   The 'Big Six' energy suppliers increased their gas and electricity prices by on average 36% between October 2010 and November 2013, yet earnings rose by only 4.4% in that time.

Put Retirement Saving Above Politics

John McTernan, former political secretary to Tony Blair, recently commented that, in the aftermath of the Budget, without consultation, the entire structure of the British pension settlement was torn up by the Chancellor.....it is the death of private pensions, it is the death of occupational pensions in the medium term and the death of pensions in their totality.   (Money Marketing, 18 September 2014.) In a new article published today by the Centre for Policy Studies, Michael Johnson considers the validity of this statement and concludes that the UK needs an independent Savings Commissioner tasked with developing policy, free of the electoral cycle, to catalyse a broad-based, retirement saving culture.

Pensioners Are the UK's Savviest and 'Switchiest' Savers

New research commissioned by Gocompare.com Savings has found that when it comes to looking after their nest eggs, the UK's over 65s are the savviest and 'switchiest' savers.   Researchers asked over 2,000 UK adults questions about their attitude towards and knowledge of their savings and found that the over 65s were the most likely age group to regularly review their savings, to know what interest rates they were earning, and be most likely to switch to better-paying accounts.

Brits Dicing With Death 12 Times a Week

The average Brit admits to putting themselves at risk 1.7 times a day, on average.   • More than one in ten people (11%) admit to finding themselves in 5 or more potentially dangerous situations on a daily basis.
