Regeneration Partnership Latest Update

5th December 2011 Energy: Meygen, the leaseholders of the "Inner Sound" tidal site in the Pentland Firth, held two public information days this week to update on key issues such as project timescale, environmental surveys, the potential locations and scale of expected onshore works and the technical solution for exporting power to the grid.  Nearly 100 people attended over the two days, and heard that Meygen will be submitting its Environmental Statement to consenting authorities in the New Year for a Phase 1 of up to 86 turbines, each of which will be separately connected to the grid.

16 of the 19 CCs that had gone into abeyance will be able to continue.   12 Community Councils received sufficient nominations to form a Community Council ie they attracted half or more than their maximum entitlement (7-13).

Below is a list of the roads currently closed in the Highlands and Islands: Mainland A890 Strome Ferry between A87 Junction and Strathcarron B9007 Carrbridge - Ferness C38 Cairngorm Ski road A82 at Corran Ferry Beallach Na Ba (Applecross to Tornacross) Other routes are affected by snow, ice or surface water and drivers are urged to take extra care.   The Traffic Scotland website is an excellent resource for up to date information about trunk roads www.trafficscotland.org or phone 0800 028 1414..

Advice To The Public From Police Re Roads etc

NORTHERN Constabulary are asking members of the public to continue to exercise caution on the roads during today.   Whilst conditions have improved across the Western Isles and the Highlands many roads are still affected by fallen trees and surface water.

Redesign Of Health Services In West Caithness

Around 50 people this week attended an open drop-in event on the redesign of health services in West Caithness.   NHS Highland is currently re-evaluating a number of possible options for changes to health services in West Caithness, including changes to some services which are delivered on the Dunbar Hospital site, as well services provided in the community.

Hi-Scot Credit Union say NO to High Cost Credit

HI-Scot Credit Union are launching a campaign across the Highlands and Islands so that people are more aware of the cost of borrowing.   The warning follows a revelation that some High Street banks charge more than 800,000% APR for unauthorised overdrafts.

Council welcomes Scottish Government's infrastructure plans

The Highland Council has welcomed the Scottish Government's plans for substantial investment in Scotland's rail network; the dualling of road network between all of Scotland's cities, including the A 9 Perth - Inverness and the A96 Inverness - Aberdeen road; and the upgrading of the A 82 between Fort William and Crianlarich.   The Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment, Alex Neil, made the pledge as he published the Scottish Government's Infrastructure and Investment Plan, which details plans for up to £60 billion of spending right up until 2030.

£50million for New Inverness Campus

Inverness College UHI has been given the green light to invest 50 million pounds in state-of-the-art educational facilities for the city.  Support from the Scottish Funding Council will bring together students and staff currently at the college's Longman and Midmills campuses to a new site at Beechwood, significantly modernising the institution's estate.

Tough Christmas Drink Driving Campaign

Police announce tough new measures to combat drink and drug driving - ACPOS Festive Safety Campaign.   Police will carrying out static daily road checks morning, noon and night across the Highlands as part of this years ACPOS Festive Safety Campaign to crack down on drink and drug drivers.
