Glasgow super college gets the go-ahead

City of Glasgow College has been given the green light to invest nearly £200 million in a state-of-the-art campus in the heart of the city.   Support from the Scottish Funding Council will bring together more than 40,000 students and 1,200 staff from Scotland's largest college onto two city centre sites, significantly modernising the college estate.

Community Benefits From Renewables

A new public register to help communities get the most from renewable energy projects will be established next year.   The register will include details of community benefits agreed with renewable energy developers across Scotland, helping communities make a comparison with similar developments to inform negotiations.

First Minister Alex Salmond has toasted a Beijing business which has unveiled ambitious plans to create the country's largest Scotch whisky sales network - 300 stores in three years.   These retail outlets alone are buying over £20 million of whisky annually from Scotland.

£30.5 million funding boost for rural Scotland

Organic projects throughout Scotland have been given a cash boost thanks to the latest round of Rural Priorities funding.   The number of grants awarded to organic farm businesses has doubled since last year, giving many farms the opportunity to convert to or maintain organic status.

New areas have been identified for future offshore wind development in Scotland's waters.   Marine Scotland Science's new research report for Offshore Wind Energy in Scottish waters is the first stage in the process to identify potential new areas for offshore wind energy.

Winter Weather

Transport Minister Keith Brown has provided an update on Scotland's preparations for coping with the first cold snap of winter.   Having been in the Traffic Scotland Control Centre for most of the morning overseeing the response from operating companies and the emergency services, Mr Brown praised motorists and commuters for their patience and showing common sense in treacherous conditions.

Single farm payments start

Three quarters of single farm payment recipients will start to receive their payments from 1st December 2011.   Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said that 75 per cent of payments would be made within 15 days of the payment window opening today.

New council house numbers soar

2,244 council houses were started in the two years to September 2011 compared with 1,378 in the previous 13 years, official figures confirmed today.   The Scottish Government has now allocated almost £115 million to local authorities across Scotland, which will help deliver over 4,400 new council homes.

First foot in America's door

The Scottish Government has taken the first step on the road to opening the US market to Scottish beef, lamb, venison and haggis exports today.   An application has been forwarded by the UK's Chief Veterinary Officer on Scotland's behalf to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), outlining the case for importing quality Scottish red meat and red meat products into the USA.

Investment in young people

A dedicated Minister for Youth Employment will be established and an extra £30 million will be invested in helping Scotland's young people into training, work or education to secure a stronger workforce of the future.   The announcement was made by the First Minister today in the Scottish Parliament.

Infrastructure Investment

The Scottish Government will this week publish an infrastructure pipeline of more than 50 major projects and 30 programmes across Scotland.   These have been identified as the key capital investments that will deliver growth, support jobs and keep our economy moving - despite savage Westminster cuts to the Scottish Government's capital budget and the Chancellor's Autumn Statement providing 'far too little, far too late'.

Members welcome progress on Highland Council Gaelic Language Plan

Members of The Highland Council's Gaelic Committee have welcomed the progress on the implementation of the Council's first Gaelic Language Plan 2007 - 2011 and have urged members of the public to have their say on the production of the second Highland Council Gaelic Language Plan for 2012 - 2016.   In May 2008, The Highland Council was the first organisation to gain Bòrd na Gàidhlig approval from its statutory Gaelic Language Plan.

Developing ocean energy resources

Ministers of the governments of Ireland, the UK, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey today called on the European Union to give its full backing to the development of the massive ocean energy resources that exist in these regions.   The governments gave their support to a Member State Position Paper on Ocean Energy, issued jointly by the governments of the UK, Ireland, Norway, Spain, Portugal, France and Denmark.
