Scotland sets long-term vision to cut power sector emissions

Scotland has set a target to cut carbon emissions from electricity generation by more than four-fifths by 2030, underlining the huge market for offshore wind beyond 2020.   First Minister Alex Salmond revealed the new target at the Scottish Renewables-Scottish Enterprise Offshore Wind & Supply Chain Conference, Aberdeen.

Enhancing child protection

Vulnerable children will benefit from improved support from local services, following updated guidance from the Scottish Government.   To further support practice the Scottish Government has recently completed work on three manifesto commitments on child protection.

Drivers Alerted To Roads Changes Around Kessock Bridge

A number of permanent road improvements are being put in place ahead of the Kessock Bridge works starting in February.   Transport Scotland, which is investing £13.2 million to bring the 30-year-old bridge up to modern standards, has confirmed a number of changes to the surrounding road layout.

Caithness and North Sutherland Partnership Update

Tourism, Food & Drink: Images of the Caithness area now feature in two separate Visit Scotland films promoting Scotland to prospective visitors.  The "Surprise Yourself" promotional campaign is focused on the Natural Retreats development at John O'Groats, and also promotes the journey to get to the area.

Unemployment in Scotland

Unemployment in Scotland has fallen by 14,000 over the three month period from September to November 2012, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics published today.   The figures also show that the youth unemployment rate (among those aged 16 to 24) saw the largest annual drop since the time series began in 2006 and is now the lowest level since March to May 2011.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (January, 23rd) sold 707 store cattle.  Bullocks (418) averaged 210.7p and sold to 233.3p per kg for 330kg Charolais crosses from Easter Muckernich, Tore, and £1,500 gross for a 815kg Simmental cross from Hilton Farm, Tain.

More Drink Drivers Caught

Head of Road Policing vows to keep heat on drink drivers as five caught over weekend.   The Head of Northern Constabulary's Road Policing Unit has warned that there will be no let up in Police activity to target those who fail to heed the drink/drug drive laws.

Highland Police Commander For Highland - Julian Innes

NORTHERN’S CHIEF SUPT JULIAN INNES WILL BE POLICE SCOTLAND’S LOCAL POLICING COMMANDER FOR HIGHLANDS AND ISLANDS Northern Constabulary Chief Superintendent Julian Innes has been chosen by Chief Constable Steven House as one of Police Scotland’s new 14 Local Policing Commanders.   Chief Supt Innes was named yesterday as Local Police Commander for the Highlands and Islands.

Trading Standards warn consumers to avoid on-line fake goods

Trading Standards Officers at The Highland Council are warning consumers to avoid being stung by sellers of poor quality counterfeit goods online or through social networking sites.   2012 saw an increase in complaints and information to Trading Standards about the use of the internet to sell fake goods, especially clothing, handbags, perfume, jewellery, shoes, headphones and hair straighteners.

Highland Council winter road condition reports for 21 January 2013

The Highland Council’s snow clearing / gritting route policies and area maps are online for 2012/13 at www.highland.gov.uk/gritting.   Road condition and gritting treatment reports by The Highland Council’s, Transport, Environmental and Community Services for the morning of Monday 21 January 2013 are as follows: South Sutherland and East Ross Priority routes being treated.

Kessock Bridge Resurfacing - Starts 11 February 2013

The resurfacing works for the Kessock Bridge will start on 11 February and continue until 7 June.  Everyone using the bridge whether once or regularly will need to plan for delays that are being stated will happen.

Caithness & North Sutherland Regeneration partnership Update

Weekly update from CNSRP - week commencing 14th January 2013 Energy: The Crown Estate has this week announced that it will consider investing up to £20M in two wave or tidal stream projects.  The investment will be in the construction of the projects, with each project involving multiple generation devices arranged in an array and with a total installed capacity of 3 megawatts or greater.

Today we can announce we are considering investing in the UK's first wave and tidal stream array projects, in support of our strategy to encourage growth of the emerging industry.   This follows a report last year which found there is potential for tens of gigawatts of wave and tidal projects around the UK.

European Support For Youth Guarantee

A guaranteed education training or employment opportunity for all 16-24 year olds across Europe has moved step closer this week following a vote in the European Parliament.   Scottish Minister for Youth Employment Angela Constance has welcomed the European Parliament’s overwhelming vote in favour of a resolution calling on EU Employment Ministers to agree that a Youth Guarantee be introduced in all Member States.

End Of An Era At Wick Council Offices

Offices of The Highland Council at Market Place, Wick, will close their doors for the last time at 3 pm today (Friday) ahead of an £8 million redevelopment of the site as modern Council office accommodation.   Eighty staff, including those at the Service Point, are relocating to Government Buildings, Girnigoe Street while the new offices are built at Market Place.
