DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (February, 10th) sold 70 prime cattle.  Prime bullocks (41) averaged 168.7p (+3.4p) and sold to 180p per kg and £1,177.35 gross.

Council to offer businesses City roundabout sponsorship deals

Members of The Highland Council's Inverness City Committee have given the final go ahead for a sponsorship scheme of the City's roundabouts.   Five roundabouts within Inverness will soon be advertised by the Council and interested businesses can bid for the right to sponsor the landscaping on each roundabout.

Caithness Primary School Pupils Are Healthy Highlanders

Pupils at a Caithness primary school have been named as the winners of a competition to celebrate Healthy Highland Week in which they had to suggest healthy alternatives to sweets as rewards.   Members of SNAG, the School's Nutrition Action Group, at South Primary School in Wick were presented with a cheque for the school on Wednesday (February 4) for coming up with the best ideas in the competition organised by NHS Highland.

Staff Presented With Top Toilet Awards

Following The Highland Council's success at the Loo of the Year Awards, staff from the Education, Culture and Sport service who are responsible for looking after the award winning toilets were presented with their certificates at a special ceremony in Inverness held on Tuesday 3rd February 2009' Mike Burton, Managing Director of Albany Washroom Services who sponsor the Awards travelled to Inverness to make the presentation.  He congratulated everyone involved for the superb results and said: "It is obvious that Highland Council has galvanised an enthusiastic team of motivated cleasing personnel and management that take tremendous pride in the standards of the toilets that they maintain.

Bad Weather Closes 63 Highland schools - But Not In Caithness

A total of 63 schools in Highland were closed or partially closed today (Thursday 5 February 2009) as a result of the adverse weather.  This involved 48 primary schools, 10 secondary schools, one school for pupils with additional support needs and four nursery units.

Highland Council Administration Recommends Council Tax Freeze

A freeze in the Council Tax is being recommended by the Independent/Liberal Democrat/Labour Administration of The Highland Council when the Council holds a special meeting on Thursday 12 February to confirm the 2009/10 Council Tax levels.   The tax is set to remain at the 2008/9 level and deliver a revenue budget for 2009/10 of £598 million.

BUDGET FOR ECONOMIC RECOVERY PASSES SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT

The second budget of this Scottish Government has been passed by Parliament, securing vital public spending at a time when the economy needs it most.   John Swinney, Cabinet Secretary for Finance and Sustainable Growth said the vote in favour of the spending plans would ensure a massive investment programme across Scotland would go ahead, keeping the economy moving and supporting nearly 5,000 jobs.

2008 Scottish Farm Income Estimates

Scotland's Chief Statistician has published the Aggregate Estimates for Total Income from Farming (TIFF) for 2008 and the Estimates of Average Net Farm Income (NFI) for 2007-08.   The statistics show that total income from farming decreased by £11.9 million in 2008 to £629.6 million, a fall of 1.8 per cent over the previous year before inflation is taken into account.

The massive economic potential of marine renewable energy in the North of Scotland will be mapped out for the first time.   The Scottish Government has commissioned a Marine Spatial Plan for the Pentland Firth and Orkney Waters.

Death of Highland Councillor Jimmy MacDonald

Long serving Highland Councillor for Inverness, Jimmy MacDonald, has died after a long illness at the age of 60.   A native Gaelic speaker from Baleshare in North Uist, Councillor MacDonald joined local government in 1986 when he was elected to the former Highland Regional Council.

£300,000 Invested In Thurso Precinct

The Highland Council has agreed to accelerate its spending on the facelift of Thurso pedestrian precinct to complete the £300,000 project by Easter.   The six-week first phase of the reconstruction of the pedestrian-friendly area was completed at the end of last year.

Support To Continue For Highland Social Enterprise Waste Projects

In recognition of the valuable work Social Enterprise companies in the Highlands do in diverting waste from landfill sites, The Highland Council has confirmed its continued support by allocating over £1.1 million of grant funding for the next two years.   In Highland currently 7 groups receive grant funding based on an agreed amount for every tonne recycled plus the equivalent waste disposal cost for every tonne recycled.

New Research To Help Rural Sufferers Of Lung Disease

The Centre for Rural Health in Inverness, and Distance Lab, a digital media research institute based at Horizon Scotland in Forres, are to work together to develop a new communication system that will enable suffers of chronic lung disease to participate in group rehabilitation exercises in the comfort of their own homes.  The research has been funded by a £63,000 grant from Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS).
