The Highland Council, Northern Constabulary and Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service are joining forces to reduce the number of unauthorised bonfires throughout the Highlands in the lead up to Bonfire Night and the inappropriate use of fireworks. Group Manager Robert Scott from Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service said that this was a good example of the Inverness Community Partnership working with partners and sharing information.

First Minister Alex Salmond has welcomed the successful sale of the Nigg fabrication site on the Cromarty Firth to Global Energy Group (GEG) and announces £1.8m support to transform yard into a renewables hub. GEG has announced the completion of the sale from American company KBR and the Wakelyn Trust.

The Community of Caithness and North Sutherland is soon to gain from a new £4M community benefit package which is being provided by the NDA from the new Low Level Waste Facility currently being developed at Dounreay. 1345 empty homes targeted in the Highlands Local authorities are to receive new powers to tax empty homes that could help raise millions to build new affordable housing. The Council Tax on Empty Homes and Housing Support Grant Bill proposals could apply to the 1345 properties that have currently been empty for more than six months and are liable to pay Council Tax in the Highlands.

Following a period of statutory consultation, The Highland Council is recommending the replacement of Wick's four primary schools with two new purpose built facilities. A report to be considered by the Education Culture and Sport Committee on Thursday 10 November will recommend the Council spends almost £20 million on two new community schools - one to the north of the River Wick and one to the south.
