International construction and consultancy firm, Mace, along with AtkinsRealis, Gleeds and i3Works, will deliver a range of project & programme management and project controls services as part of a four-year framework with the NDA - the non-departmental public body working on behalf of government to clean-up the UK's earliest nuclear sites safely, securely and cost effectively. A Mace, AtkinsRealis and Gleeds alliance has been working collaboratively with the NDA for the past two years via a framework, and i3Works has now joined the team for this latest edition to add even more capability and capacity.

UNISON, the union for police staff, says Scotland's police budget cut will see even more crime going unreported and crimes not being fully investigated. The Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) Report has been published today and sets out significant progress of the programme to deliver a safe and permanent solution for the UK's most radioactive waste.
Upgrade work was required to the primary cold trap loop (PCTL) vessel before it could be used on the next stage of decommissioning. Dounreay's prototype fast reactor decommissioning team is in the process of connecting up the reactor vessel and pipework to water vapour nitrogen (WVN) treatment skids, which will destroy the residual sodium in the system, and enable it to be dismantled safely.
Mark Rouse recently had the opportunity to try his hand at being an airfed suit operator in the training simulator at Dounreay. "I think it was a few years ago when I was first at Dounreay, I expressed an interest in experiencing things that the workforce went through - and airfed suits was one that particularly interested me.
An important part of the work to close down Dounreay is to address the legacy of radioactive particles in the marine environment around the site. Particles are fragments of irradiated nuclear fuel discharged to sea as a result of historic practices in reprocessing.
A 'pack' of robotic 'dogs' have been harnessed to help Dounreay with monitoring work on site. Spot, a robotic quadruped (‘dog') from Boston Dynamics, has the ability to climb stairs, avoid obstacles, and move over rough ground, allowing it to monitor and collect data in hazardous areas.
