Acas publishes advice to help employers avoid fire and rehire practices

Workplace expert, Acas, published evidence on the use of fire and rehire practices at work in June.   In response, the Government asked Acas to produce guidance to help employers explore all other options first before considering fire and rehire to change employee contracts.

Bird Flu - Latest Situation: Avian Influenza Prevention Zone Declared Across Great Britain

Poultry keepers must take action now to protect their flocks from bird flu this winter.   Following a number of detections of avian influenza (bird flu) in wild birds across Great Britain, the Chief Veterinary Officers from England, Scotland and Wales have declared an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) across the whole of Great Britain to mitigate the risk of the disease spreading amongst poultry and captive birds.

Preventing Drug Deaths - Free phone line launched to help drugs users stay safe

A new anonymous phone service will see trained staff stay on the line while people are using drugs to ensure they remain safe.   The "Never Use Alone" phone line will be run by the charity "We Are With You" backed by £100,000 funding from the Scottish Government.

Buy Toys Safely This Christmas

OPSS has produced safety guidance on how to buy toys safely this Christmas.   The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is partnering with Chartered Trading Standards Institute, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, Child Accident Prevention Trust and Netmums to raise awareness of how to buy toys safely.

Director fraudulently obtained £150,000 Covid-19 financial assistance is banned along with friend who also took £50,000.   Muneef Ihsan, 26 from Rotherham, was director of three companies between 2019 and 2020.

UK Export Finance and GE Energy Financial Services announce agreement reached to finance the largest solar facility in Turkey, the size of 4,600 football pitches.   UK Export Finance support will help construct Turkey's largest solar facility that will power 2 million households.

JCVI Issues Advice On Covid-19 Booster Vaccines For Those Aged 40 To 49 And Second Doses For 16 To 17 Year Olds

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has advised that, in addition to those aged over 50 years and at higher risk from coronavirus (COVID-19), all adults aged 40 to 49 years should be offered an mRNA booster, 6 months after their second dose, irrespective of the vaccines given for the first and second doses.   Recent UK and international data have provided early signs of a slight fall in the levels of protection against severe disease from the primary doses, in those who had their initial vaccines a long time ago.

Views are being sought on how to improve the way bail and prison custody operates in Scotland.   A consultation has been launched on how custody is used as part of the criminal justice system and how support can be given to better help people move on from their offending behaviour within communities while ensuring public protection and victim safety remain at the centre of the process.

Online Portal For Autumn/winter Vaccination Programme

Advance booking facility for booster and flu jabs.   An online portal is now available to allow people aged 50 to 59, unpaid carers who are 16 and over, and those aged 16 and over who are household contacts of immunosuppressed individuals to book their Autumn/Winter vaccination appointments.

Expanding Primary Care

Funding of £7 million will improve GP surgeries, expanding the level of care to patients across Scotland.   Vacant high street units will be taken over by Integration Authorities to expand the primary care estate, with the funding also used to support GP practices, including digitising records to free up more space.

Boosters give over 90% protection against symptomatic COVID-19 in adults over 50

Results from first UK real-world study by UKHSA show significantly increased protection against symptomatic disease from Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine booster dose in those aged 50 and above.   These findings show that 2 weeks after receiving a booster dose, protection against symptomatic infection in adults aged 50 years and over was 93.1% in those with AstraZeneca as their primary course and 94.0% for Pfizer-BioNTech.

£5 million investment to help ease patient congestion.   Hospitals in Scotland are rolling out new single tests to identify whether patients are infected with Covid-19, flu or RSV (respiratory syncytial virus).

Government To Invest £375 Million In Neurodegenerative Disease Research

A £375 million investment to improve understanding and treatment for a range of neurodegenerative diseases.   Funding includes at least £50 million for motor neurone disease related research to find a cure New NIHR Motor Neurone Disease Research Unit to attract more innovative research applications People living with neurodegenerative diseases could live longer, healthier lives due to innovative new research, following a government commitment to invest £375 million over the next 5 years.

First Minister Comments On Glasgow Climate Pact - COP26 summit concludes

Commenting on the agreement of the Glasgow Climate Pact at the conclusion of the UN Climate Conference COP 26, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "Glasgow should be very proud of the warm welcome that it has given to COP26.   "The city has truly risen to the occasion and played its part by welcoming thousands of delegates, representatives, scientists and climate activists from around the world.

Uk Provides A New Home For Vulnerable Afghan Female Judges

A group of Afghan judges who are at risk under the Taliban regime have arrived in the UK to start new lives, thanks to assistance by the British Government.   Under Taliban rule female judges and others who have stood up for women's rights have been persecuted and forced into hiding, at risk of reprisals from criminals they tried and sentenced and who have now been released from prison.
