Dementia Awareness Week (18-24 June) - 'Creative Minds': Dementia in Scotland 2012 Dementia Awareness Week will run from 18-24 June 2012 and this year Alzheimer Scotland will be focusing on creativity and dementia: in policy, practice, activities and attitudes. There will be events happening all over Scotland, from Shetland to the Borders, raising awareness about dementia and the challenges faced by the 84,000 people with the illness and their families.14/6/2012
Births, Deaths and Other Vital Events - first quarter 2012
The Registrar General for Scotland today published provisional figures for births, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships registered during the first quarter of 2012. The figures show 14,218 deaths were registered in Scotland between January and the end of March 2012 - the lowest number of deaths recorded during the first quarter of the year for at least 100 years.14/6/2012
Nappies May Be Recycled Into Garden Furniture
Used nappies could be turned into garden furniture or roof tiles under an imaginative recycling scheme being trialled in Scotland. Each year around 160 million nappies are sent to rubbish dumps in Scotland but a pilot scheme in four Scottish councils could put an end to that.14/6/2012
Alex Neil Confirms Energy Contract Award
EDF Energy has been awarded the national electricity contract to supply Scotland's public sector, Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment Alex Neil confirmed today. The company will deliver electricity supplied from 100 per cent renewable sources and the three-year contract is expected to save taxpayers at least £40m, which is £10 million more than the initial 3 year period of the previous contract.14/6/2012

Possible Breakthrough on Heather Grazing
Highlands & Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, and Catherine Stihler MEP have welcomed the news of a possible breakthrough on the matter of subsidy payments for heather grazed animals. Present EU proposals would mean that only animals fed on grass and other herbaceous plants are eligible for EU subsidies however many sheep in the Highlands & Islands are heather grazed.14/6/2012

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published Poverty and income inequality in Scotland 2010/11. This publication presents annual estimates of the proportion and number of children, working age adults and pensioners living in low income households in Scotland and the distribution of household income across Scotland.13/6/2012

Zero Tolerance On Litter Campaign Continues
The Highland Council continues to run its 'zero tolerance' campaign on litter and Officers will again be making a targeted effort over the next fortnight. During the two week campaign people caught dropping litter will be issued with Fixed Penalty Notices throughout the Highland Area.13/6/2012

Planning Consent refused for Spittal Hill Wind Farm
Energy Minister Fergus Ewing has today refused planning consent for a proposed wind farm at Spittal Hill, Caithness. The Energy Minister found that the impact of the proposed wind farm on the occupants of nearby properties was too high, and that the cumulative impact of the wind farm on views when considered together with existing and consented wind farms nearby, was too high.13/6/2012

Green Light For Tenant Farming Reforms
A package of reforms to modernise the tenant farming sector were today approved by the Scottish Parliament.
