Highland Council recently approved the purchase of 20 Energy Cabins that will make big savings in energy costs and supply an income from electricity being fed into the national grid. Many of the cabins are to be installed at schools across the region. The council negotiated a large discount by making a large purchase of the cabins. Installation is to begin shortly after 31st March 2012 by which time all the cabins will have been delivered.

Councillor Bill Fernie, chairman of the Education, Culture and Sport committee said, "The council has made great efforts to find ways to deliver heating to many of our buildings that will reduce costs and improve efficiency. These new cabins can be installed in position very quickly and we should see the benefits immediately in reduced running costs in our schools that are in many cases far away from other alternatives like gas. The money from the electricity generation will pay for the cabins within 5 years according to our figures. From the education budget as well as the council position in other areas this is a welcome move."

The biomass cabins will be installed at the following locations -
Bayview House
Lybster Primary School
Seaforth House
Bridgend Primary School
Invergordon Leisure Centre
Invergordon Academy
Isobel Rhind Centre

Waste management long term strategic direction
At today's (Wednesday 27 November 2024) Communities & Place Committee, Members agreed the most appropriate long-term strategic direction for residual waste management is to continue to utilise a merchant provider solution.   Communities & Place Committee Chair, Cllr Graham MacKenzie said: "After careful consideration and analysis it has been agreed that a merchant provider solution is considered the most appropriate long term solution to our statutory waste management obligations, and that an energy-from- waste facility within the Highlands is not considered to be a suitable course of action.
