Highland Council winter road condition and school closure report for Tuesday 20 January 2026

Highland Council road conditions report for Tuesday 20 January 2026 is as follows:

Mid and East Ross, and Black Isle (As at 09:30)

A bit of a cold start to this morning with lots of grey frost and some icy patches across the network. All routes currently being treated. Surface temperatures are expected to rise today, however some ice patches may still be possible on any untreated surfaces.

Caithness As at 07:39)

Road surface temperatures above zero. No action required. No overnight issues to report.

Sutherland (As at 08:21)

Rising road temperatures this morning. Some routes still with low road surface temperatures so treated as required. No footpath treatments.

Skye and Raasay (As at 09:17)

No winter action. Positive road surface temperatures throughout area.

Lochaber (As at 08:25)

Road surface temperatures above zero this morning with damp roads. No winter treatments required. No issues reported overnight

Nairn (As at 06:48)

Negative temps throughout the area this morning with black ice covering the network. All routes as well as footpaths being treated. No known overnight issues.

Inverness (As at 05:36)

Road surface temperatures starting to rise but still below freezing in most of our area. Running weekend routes and covering footpaths today as resource allows. Black ice in places.

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh (As at 11:15)

Cold morning with low road surface temperatures. No overnight issues reported.

Badenoch and Strathspey (As at 06:48)

Negative temps throughout the area this morning with black ice covering the network. All routes as well as footpaths being treated. No known overnight issues.

Public Consultation Launches For Feedback On Highland Play Areas

Highland Council has launched a public consultation for feedback on a draft Highland Play Sufficiency Assessment A Play Sufficiency Assessment (PSA) assesses the provision and quality of outdoor play spaces, as well as the accessibility of play opportunities, and is developed in accordance with Scottish Government guidance.   Councillor Ken Gowans, Chair of the Council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee, said: "The PSA has assessed our formal and informal play spaces throughout Highland to better understand the facilities, functions and potential limitations of these spaces.
