HIE Launches Household Survey

Up to 26,000 people across the Highlands and Islands are being invited to take part in a regional survey on what's important to them living and working in their communities.   A total of 13,000 households, chosen at random, are being contacted directly over the next few days.

Nuclear Decommissioning Authority: Draft Business Plan 2022 To 2025 For Consultation - Closes 31st January

The Draft Business Plan sets out what the main activities will be to advance our important clean-up and decommissioning work over the next 3 years, and what funding will be available for them.  It also highlights some of the other essential work to enable us to carry out our mission-critical activities.

HIE Publishes Results Of Latest Business Panel Survey

This is according to the findings of the latest business panel survey undertaken by Ipsos MORI for Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in October.   More than a thousand businesses in the region were contacted for their views on topics such as financial health, priorities and concerns.

Construction Pauses For Winter As Cairngorm Mountain Gets Ready To Welcome Skiers

One of the UK's most challenging civil engineering projects will be paused for the next few months as winter takes hold on Cairngorm mountain estate.   Teams from contractor Balfour Beatty, acting for Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), have been busy on site since April 2021, carrying out a range of technical tasks to strengthen the 1.8km viaduct that supports the Cairngorm funicular railway.

£5m For Aquaculture R and D Project That Will Create 30 Jobs

A four-year aquaculture R&D project that will create 30 jobs has been awarded up to £5m.   A four-year aquaculture research and development project has been awarded up to £5m in public sector funding.

NDA Group Extends Partnership To Inspire Young Nuclear Professionals

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has today announced a two-year extension to its ground-breaking industrial partnership aimed at inspiring and supporting young people in the nuclear industry.   Chief Executive, David Peattie, announced that the NDA's partnership with the Nuclear Institute’s (NI) Young Generation Network (YGN) would continue for another two years following a hugely successful first year of collaboration and support.

Rope Access Experts Carry Out Rock Maintenance Work At Dounreay Waste Vaults

Rope access experts have been abseiling down 20 metre high rock walls around Dounreay's low level radioactive waste vaults, carrying out rock face maintenance and stabilisation work.   Dounreay operates facilities for the disposal of low-level radioactive waste adjacent to the nuclear licensed site.

Dounreay Foreshore Particle Finds 2021 - Latest Particle Find 19th November

DSRL have updated the information about particle finds on the foreshore at Dounreay to include the latest find on 19th November 2021.   An important part of the work to close down Dounreay is to address the legacy of radioactive particles in the marine environment around the site.

Advice On Household Finances - Online Support For People Facing Financial Difficulties

Households experiencing financial difficulties are being offered greater support to help their recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.   The Money Support Scotland website, funded by the Scottish Government, will point users to a range of organisations committed to promoting the take up of social security benefits, free debt advice and access to affordable credit.

West Coast Community Launches Hydropower Scheme

The Barr River hydropower scheme was completed in July 2021 on a site deep in the forest, 11 miles from the village of Lochaline.   Today will also mark the opening of two further community-developed facilities - a community hub and new housing.

Second Forres Building Occupied By Expanding Space Firm

The purpose built 929 square metre manufacturing facility at 5 Innovation Way is owned by park developer, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).  It sits opposite Orbex's existing premises also located in the Enterprise Park and owned by the company.

Entries are now open for the 2022 University of the Highlands and Islands business competition.  Budding entrepreneurs with a business idea are invited to apply, with £8000 in prize money up for grabs.

The Young Company Capital Investment Grant Scheme

As part of our continued response to supporting economic recovery following the pandemic, this fund aims to stimulate an increase in regional employment for individuals aiming to move into self-employment whilst helping to support growth and resilience in young companies.   The scheme can provide grant funding of up to 50% of eligible costs for capital equipment for start-up or young companies/social enterprises (less than five years old).

Dounreay Collaborates With University To Inspire A Culture Of Innovation

DSRL, the University of the Highlands and Islands and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) have collaborated to develop an innovation workshop for some of Dounreay's future talent.   Dounreay was a former nuclear research centre for 50 years, and now wishes to trial innovative ideas as it decommissions, by challenging conventional methods and bringing in ideas from other industries.

Pentland Tenants Vote Yes For Transfer To Cairn

Tenants of Pentland Housing Association have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a transfer to Cairn Housing Association.   The transfer will deliver £6.3 million of investment in tenants' homes and the local community, alongside a locked in five-year affordable rent guarantee and continued local services delivered by a new combined team based in Thurso.

Orkney Brewery Set To Create Jobs And Cut Carbon

Sinclair Breweries, which operates the Orkney Brewery, is investing £300,000 to expand the kitchen in the brewery's visitor centre, install an on-site kegging plant and set up an improved temperature control system.   A contribution of up to £99,000 has been secured from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

This is the latest iteration of the Mission Progress Report (MPR) which focuses on the key themes that form the milestones by which we will deliver our mission across our nuclear sites.   In this report, our progress and goals have been aligned with those in our latest Strategy, published in March 2021, allowing for a more consistent approach to presenting our decommissioning mission.
