North Highland College No Plans Yet In Place To Deal With Serious Financial Problems

Colleges' financial challenges increase.   The Audit Scotland report published today (4th June 2019) shows North Highland college is only one of several colleges not to have any financial plan in place to deal with a growing deficit.

First Newton Room In The UK Is Officially Opened In Thurso

The first Norwegian style learning centre in the UK was officially opened in Thurso today Monday 25th March 2019.   Newton Rooms are designed to inspire more young people to become interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), and encourage them to study these subjects in school and beyond.

Career prospects increasing for college leavers

The prospects of those qualifying through Highlands and Islands colleges are continuing to increase according to the Scottish Funding Council's annual College Leaver Destinations report.  The publication, released last week, reports on the destinations of those who left college in the 2016 to 2017 academic year.

Colleges' Financial Health Improves But Challenges Remain

A deal to harmonise staff pay at a cost of £50m a year will absorb projected savings from the reform of Scotland's colleges, says the Auditor General.   Caroline Gardner's annual report on colleges says the sector reported a very small surplus in its underlying financial position in 2016/17, compared to the previous year's £8m deficit.

Report highlights success of Highland and Islands colleges

A new report has revealed that 70.3% of full-time students successfully completed their studies at Highlands and Islands colleges in the 2016 to 2017 academic year.  This is higher than the national average figure which shows that 65.3% of students passed further education courses at Scottish colleges in the period.

Wick High Finalist In Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Awards for Planning Excellence 2018.

The £48.5m Wick Community Campus built by Morrison Construction has been announced as a finalist at the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) Awards for Planning Excellence 2018.   The project is entered in the category for "Excellence in Planning for a Successful Economy" against eight other finalists from across the UK with the winner to be announced during a ceremony at Milton Court Concert Hall on 24 May 2018.

Report highlights threat of marine plastics to seabirds

A new report has highlighted the threat marine plastic pollution poses to seabirds in the northeastern Atlantic region.  Researchers found that, of 34 seabird species investigated, 74% have ingested plastic.

Caithness Professor Appointed As Vice Principal Of UHI

Vice-principals take up roles at University of the Highlands and Islands.   The University of the Highlands and Islands has appointed three new vice-principals to its senior management team to increase representation from the 13 colleges and research institutions which make up its partnership.

At present, I am considering the idea of running a summer CAD School, this idea would depend on firstly any student interest in the Caithness County.   So many people think that CAD is all about engineering, well it's not, if you wish to design your ideas for doing your embroidery then you can, if you would like to design your own jewellery then you can, if you wish to design your own house then you can.

Partnership agreement to deliver engineering skills

A new three-year partnership agreement between North Highland College UHI and Nigg Skills Academy has been signed to deliver engineering skills and qualifications to the Ross-Shire area at their academy in Nigg.   Nigg Skills Academy works with employers and industry bodies to deliver engineering skills to meet today's industry demands, has established a memorandum of understanding with North Highland College UHI to continue to provide opportunities for those seeking careers within the engineering and energy industry.

Pipers to lead pupils back to school at new Wick Campus

Around 400 pupils and teachers attending Newton Park Primary school and Nursery at Wick Campus in Wick will walk to their new school on Wednesday 26 April setting off at 9am from the Old Pulteneytown Academy building.   The procession of pupils in their new school uniforms will be led by Highland Bagpipers Alistair Miller and Chester Henry, a P7 pupil, along the new pedestrian access path and ramp down to the new building.
