Minister Announces £190k HIE Investment In Moray Shipyard Expansion

Macduff Shipyard Limited (MSL) is to double the berthing capacity of its facility in Buckie.   This will enable the company to take on more building, maintenance and repair work for various industry sectors and vessels.

New Waste Route Opens Up For Dounreay's Low Level Waste

Dounreay has successfully trialled a new waste route for incineration of its low-level waste, in conjunction with Nuclear Waste Services.   Fourteen 200-litre drums of low-level waste were recently transported to waste treatment company Tradebe for incineration.

Six island local authorities will receive a share of £4.45 million to assist critical projects on climate change, population retention and tourism.   A total of 11 projects, spread across 31 islands, have received funding for the current financial year as part of the Islands Programme.

UK Households' Spending Power To Drop By £3,000, Warns Thinktank

An article published in the Guardian on 1 September 2022.   Households in Britain will see their spending power cut by an average £3,000 by the end of next year unless the new government acts to counter the biggest drop in living standards in at least a century, research has indicated.

Folic Acid Added To Flour To Prevent Brain And Spinal Conditions In Foetuses

Folic acid to be added to non-wholemeal flour across the UK to help prevent life-threatening brain and spinal conditions in foetuses.   Defra launches UK-wide consultation on the Bread and Flour Regulations on the amount of folic acid to be added to flour Under the government's proposals, pregnancies affected by neural tube defects could fall by more than a fifth.

The Cost Of Living Crisis Has Been Many Years In The Making - But Politicians On Both Sides Ignore This

Fears over the cost of living have reached new highs in the UK after power regulator Ofgem confirmed that the energy price cap will nearly double from October to cost the average household £3,549 a year.  There has been much discussion about what the government needs to do to help people and businesses this winter, but the crisis is still being presented as a short-term problem that will ease in due course.

Energy Crisis: Why The UK Will Be At The Mercy Of International Gas Prices For Years To Come

The UK is trying to ensure households and businesses have enough energy this winter by turning to international markets buoyed by booming US liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, and reinstating retired storage capabilities.  But the impact of Russia's recent decision to switch off its Nord Stream 1 pipeline has proven that European countries are still very much at the mercy of changes in global gas market supply and demand.

Action On Water Efficiency - New Labelling To Protect Water Supplies And Cut Energy Bills

Taps, showers, dishwashers and washing machines could all have new water efficiency labels, in a move which will help save 1,200 million litres of water a day - the equivalent of 480 Olympic swimming pools across the UK.   The plans, subject to a 12-week consultation, will encourage the purchase of more water-efficient products and help customers manage their water and energy bills.

The team running High Life Highland's library service have retained their Customer Service Excellence award, achieving a 100% full compliance with the prestigious award's criteria.   Talking about the award, Julie Corcoran, HLH's Head of Libraries said, "The Customer Service Excellence Award has been developed by the Cabinet Office to acknowledge excellence in public services.

Real household disposable incomes are on course to fall by 10 per cent over this year and next - the deepest living standards squeeze in a century.   The number of people living in absolute poverty is set to rise by three million, highlighting the scale of the task facing the new Prime Minister when they take office on Monday, according to a new Resolution Foundation report published today (Thursday 1 September 2022).

UK And Guernsey Strike Landmark Reciprocal Healthcare Deal

Residents of the UK and the Bailiwick of Guernsey can access free emergency and necessary healthcare when visiting either territory from 1 January 2023.   Minister of State for Health Maria Caulfield signs the arrangement with Guernsey's Chief Minister in central London People planning to travel to Guernsey next year are encouraged to take their UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which is being expanded and improved post Brexit UK residents visiting the Bailiwick of Guernsey will benefit from free necessary healthcare, and vice versa, after a landmark deal was signed today (Wednesday 31 August).
