Latest Fraser of Allander and Scottish Chambers of Commerce report

The latest Scottish Chambers of Commerce (SCC) Quarterly Economic Indicator in partnership with the University of Strathclyde Business School's Fraser of Allander Institute survey for Q3 of 2020 has been published (October 8).   The outlook remains grim in all sectors, particularly for businesses in retail and tourism, which have been hit hard by restrictions and face a bleak winter as business support and confidence plummets.

The Citizens Assembly - Are You Aware Of It?

The Assembly is made up of over 100 people randomly recruited from across Scotland.  The membership have been selected to be broadly representative of the adult population (16 and over) in terms of age, gender, socio-economic class/educational qualifications, ethnic group, geography and political attitudes.

Business Hardship Fund grant applications open now

Highland Council has today launched - on behalf of the Scottish Government - the COVID-19 Business Hardship Fund.   Grants of £1,000 and £1,500 are available for eligible businesses up to a maximum of £10,000 if the business has multiple premises.

A BBC Scotland programme tonight at 7.40pm on how students were taken back to full halls and no testing.   Some of Scotland's biggest universities did not reduce the capacity of their student halls despite the need for physical distancing, the BBC has found.

Defra Seeks Views On Expanding Use Of Monitoring Technology On Fishing Boats

Government to examine roll out of Remote Electronic Monitoring on fishing vessels.   Today (Monday 19 October) the Government has opened a call for evidence to examine whether monitoring technology could be used more widely on fishing boats operating in English waters to help support the sector by preventing overfishing.

Call For Urgent Meeting On Funding

Investment Minister Ivan McKee is urging the UK Government to reverse its decision to cancel talks on the scheme which will replace EU structural funds.   A planned meeting with Housing, Communities and Local Government Minister Luke Hall was cancelled last month and now Mr McKee has been told it will not take place until after the UK Government's Comprehensive Spending Review, which is expected to contain full details of the new UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).

New Grant For Local Projects - Scotland Loves Local Encourages Community Shopping

A new £1 million ‘Scotland Loves Local' fund will provide grants of between £500 and £5,000 to hundreds of projects to promote town centre and online businesses.   The funding aims to support small scale improvements that will help motivate people to shop, eat and relax within their community whilst ensuring public health safety.

Do You Have Employees Working From Home Because Of Covid-19

If you've asked your employees to work from home, and you’ve not reimbursed them already, your employees may be entitled to claim tax relief on additional household expenses they’ve incurred, such as heating and lighting.   From 6 April 2020, this tax relief is based on £6 per week or £26 per month (£4 per week, or £18 per month before 6 April 2020).

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (October, 16th) sold 4,938 store sheep.   Lambs (3,467) averaged £57.69 (last year £47.43) and sold to £79 gross for a Beltex cross from Carn Raineach, Applecross and for a pen of Suffolk crosses from Balvaird Farm, Muir of Ord.

Deaths Involving Covid-19 Week 41-5th To 11th October

s at 11 October, a total of 4,301 deaths have been registered in Scotland where the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was mentioned on the death certificate, according to statistics published by National Records of Scotland (NRS) today.   Between 5-11 October, 25 deaths were registered that mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate, an increase of 5 from the previous week.

Local Government Has Reduced The Worst Impacts Of Covid For The Most Vulnerable

By intervening, Local Government has reduced the worst impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic for the most vulnerable in our communities, COSLA said today (Wednesday).   COSLA also said that is why their Blueprint outlines the lead role of Local Government in securing a fair and inclusive recovery with a strong focus on human rights, tackling poverty and addressing inequalities.

Dingwall And Highland Marts Ltd - Sale 15 October 2020

FORT WILLIAM, Dingwall and Highland Marts Ltd., (October, 15th) sold 231 weaned calves and store cattle, 30 OTM cattle and 3 adult head of breeding cattle.   Bullocks (139) averaged 240.7p and sold to 282.1p per kg for a pair of 140kg Limousin crosses from Ardnamurchan Estates, Kilchoan, and £870 gross for a pair of 420kg Salers crosses from 2 & 3 Kinloid, Arisaig.

Funding Increase For Businesses Through Adopt An Apprentice

More financial support is being provided to employers to take on apprentices who have been made redundant as a result of the pandemic.  Payments for employers recruiting apprentices who have lost their jobs is being increased from £2,000 to £5,000 through the Scottish Government's Adopt an Apprentice programme..   The increased payment will help more apprentices find a new employer and complete their apprenticeship.
