New Restaurant, Cafe and Chip Shop In Wick

Northern Sole Restaraunt, Cafe & Takeaway formerly known as Elizabeths moved to its new home at the old Cabrelli's Cafe next door to Camps in Wick.  The owners are delighted to announce that they are officially open and would like to welcome new and old customers to the new business.

September start for new High Life Highland Chief Executive

Steve Walsh OBE has been appointed as the Chief Executive designate for High Life Highland, it was announced today by Donald McLachlan, the Chair of the charity's Board.   Mr Walsh will take up post in early September 2019, following the retirement of current Chief Executive, Ian Murray.

New Face At Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership

In April 2019 Peter Faccenda took over the role of Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership manager.   He takes over from Eann Sinclair who was appointment as Caithness and Sutherland area manager for Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).

Pentland Housing Association is delighted to confirm that it is looking to develop a constitutional partnership with another Housing Association.   It is pursuing this option to ensure that there are more investment opportunities available for the Caithness area - investment in the existing stock as well as the opportunity to investigate new build opportunities in the area.

Reids Bakery of Thurso did their customers proud at the weekend by taking home a top prize in the Scottish Baker of the Year 2019/20 competition.   The bakery was awarded: Strawberry Tart - Regional Silver Brown Bread - Regional Gold Buttery - Special Silver.

Highland Council Trading Standards warns consumers of new "authorised push payment scam" targeting bank customers

Highland Council Trading Standards have been made aware that cold call telephone scammers have recently changed tactics and are now targeting individual bank customers to gain access to bank accounts and clear bank accounts of cash.   The so-called "authorised push payment scam" involves a fraudster impersonating a bank representative and phoning an unsuspecting potential victim by telephone.

NorthLink Ferries Cultivates Agricultural Show Presence

Visitors to some of Scotland's main agricultural shows this summer could win free travel to the Northern Isles on board Serco NorthLink Ferries.   Anyone stopping by the company's stand at the Royal Highland Show, Caithness Show, Turriff Show or Isles Shows will be able to enter a prize draw for a trip on board its vessels.

Strengthening town centres in Caithness and Sutherland

The Highland Council is asking communities and other stakeholders for their thoughts and opinion on a draft strategy to improve the town centres of Brora, Dornoch, Golspie, Thurso and Wick.   The draft Caithness and Sutherland Town Centre Strategy presents several potential actions for each of the town centres.

Planning permission granted for Materials Recovery Facility at Longman, Inverness

The Highland Council's South Planning Applications Committee has today (Tuesday 11 June 2019) granted planning permission for a new centralised waste management facility (Materials Recovery Facility) on part of the former Longman landfill site in Inverness.   The facility is intended to support the Council in meeting forthcoming changes to national waste regulations.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (June, 11th) sold 13 prime cattle.   Prime Bullocks (4) averaged 211.7p (+1.7p) and sold to 216.0p per kg and £1,350.40 gross.

Colleges' financial challenges increase.   The Audit Scotland report published today (4th June 2019) shows North Highland college is only one of several colleges not to have any financial plan in place to deal with a growing deficit.

Director of Community Services steps down after 20 years service

William Gilfillan, Director of Community Services will be leaving the Council on Friday, 7th June 2019.   William joined Highland Council from Fife Council in 2000 to lead the New Community School development in Alness Academy.

Highland schools and Police call on people to share information on suspected anti-social, alcohol and drug activity.   Highland Council secondary schools in the Mid Highland area and Police Scotland are writing to parents and carers urging them to share any concerns or information related to possible anti-social behaviour, alcohol and drug activity in their areas.

UN Expert Laments UK's Doubling Down On Failed Anti-poor Policies

GENEVA (22 May 2019) - The UK Government's policies have led to the systematic immiseration of millions across Great Britain, the UN's expert on poverty and human rights said in a report released today, calling for a new vision that embodies compassion to end the unnecessary hardship.   "The results of the austerity experiment are crystal clear," Philip Alston said in his report following an official visit to the country in November 2018.

Caithness And North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership - Update

Weeks commencing 20th & 27th May Energy & Business Services: The Beatrice Offshore Windfarm project this week reached an output capacity of 587.9MW (its installed capacity is 588MW), which is the highest output from any renewable source in Scotland.  And as the construction phase of the Beatrice Offshore project comes to an end it is good to see that offshore piling operations have begun for the Moray East offshore windfarm development.

Brexit effect impacts Scotland's office market

The number of Scottish businesses considering a move into flexible workspace has increased by almost a fifth in the past year amid Brexit uncertainty.   New research from the flexible workspace finder Officio shows companies seeking flexible accommodation in Scotland increased markedly during the year to April 2019 as larger firms sought to streamline operations and make themselves more nimble.
