Increase In Modern Apprenticeships

On track for 30,000 by 2020 target.   The number of Modern Apprenticeship starts increased to 26,262 and exceeded the 2016/17 annual target, new statistics have confirmed.

Oil And Gas Innovation Spend Up

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has welcomed new figures showing oil and gas innovation spend in Scotland almost trebled last year.   Funding of £15.9m from Scottish Enterprise supported 82 companies to deliver 111 innovation projects with a combined value of £43 million to develop and maintain companies' global competitiveness.

Strengthening Wildlife Law Enforcement

The importance of forensic science in detecting and tackling wildlife crime will be discussed when representatives from more than 30 countries attend an event in Edinburgh today.   The Society for Wildlife Forensic Science's symposium, which is being held outside the USA for the first time, will focus on how scientists can best support wildlife crime investigations - from illegal timber logging and fisheries, to illegal wildlife trade and persecution on both national and international levels.

Highland Council And Police Highlight Role Of Communities In Countering Terrorism

The Highland Council took part in observing a minute's silence at 11:00 today Tuesday 6 June, in respect of the terrorist attack in London on Saturday 3 June 2017.   Leader of the Highland Council, Margaret Davidson said: "Our thoughts and sympathies are with all those affected by these most recent horrific incidents.

Cost of Scottish Independence

New research conducted on behalf of the Scottish Research Society (SRS) by Walbrook Economics concludes that the cost of Scottish independence has risen from a minimum of £850 for the average Scot in 2014 to at least £2000 in 2017.   The evidence is revealed in a new report "Saving Scotland from Financial Meltdown" published by the SRS, which is an update of its previous report "Much cost - Little benefit" published in advance of the independence referendum of 2014.

Highland Council pays respect to lives lost in London

A minutes silence was held today at 11am in all Highland Council premises in tribute to the victims of the London terrorist attack.   At the Council's headquarters on Glenurquhart Road in Inverness, staff joined the Members to observe the silence.

Award Boost For Thurso Engineering Firm - Envision Engineering And Design Limited

A Thurso based engineering firm has secured an industry accreditation award that will boost its reputation internationally and help attract new business.   Envision Engineering and Design Limited created five jobs when it was set up less than a year ago by Liam Sutherland and Stuart Anderson, both of whom are originally from Caithness.

Renewable Energy Companies Need To Share The Profits For Highland Communities

Energy companies should share more of the profits made from the development of the Highlands' natural resources of wind, wave, tidal and hydro to allow economic growth and job creation in the Highlands and Islands.   Olivia Bell, Labour's General Election candidate for Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, is making the plea after carrying out some number crunching around the profits being made by companies in the lucrative renewable energy industry.

Snp Opposition Leader Fails To Back The Highlands

In extraordinary scenes during yesterday's Highland Council meeting, Leader of the Opposition Councillor Maxine Smith, attempted to block the council from having a higher profile at a national level.  Along with her SNP colleagues she refused to back a suggestion to nominate Council Leader, Margaret Davidson, as a Vice President of COSLA.

SNP Unhappy After Succession Of Defeats At Highland Council

Leader responds to SPA report on Inverness Control Room

Responding to a report to the Scottish Police Authority (SPA) Board, Leader of the Council, Margaret Davidson said: "I understand that the SPA is to receive an update on the plans to close the Inverness Control Room and establish a National Database Enquiry Unit (NDEU), with a decision being deferred until August.   The Council's position has always been and remains that the Police Control Room should be retained in the Highlands.

Sun Shines On The Highlands' Beach Standards

Clean beaches celebrated ahead of bathing season.   Environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful, has announced that 12 beaches from across the Highlands have been recognised for the high standards provided to users - from keeping sand litter free to providing excellent information and accessible amenities.
