TIDAL ENERGY DATA SURVEY ANNOUNCED

A new survey is being funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) to draw together current data relevant to marine energy developments in the Pentland Firth.   By collating the information HIE will be able to help identify gaps that exist in the current data, and underpin future survey work needed to support the industry's development.

The annual hunt is underway to find the best young innovators in the Highlands and Islands.   The ICT Youth Challenge is looking for more young people with bright ideas.

Stagecoach Reinstates three and half hour bus service between Caithness and Inverness

A three and a half hour bus service between Thurso and Inverness has been reinstated following much public pressure and a closed doors meeting between senior Stagecoach staff and Caithness Transport Forum.   At a meeting on Friday morning between Caithness Transport Forum members and other local stakeholders with Stagecoach officials, Stagecoach Operations Manager, William Mainus announced that the bus company was bowing to public pressure and from the 8th December both the 7.03am Thurso to Inverness service (via Wick) and the 25X 8.03am Thurso to Inverness service (via Halkirk) would be speeded up by limiting stops after Tain, arriving at Inverness at 10.30am and 11.30am respectively.

SEPA urges everyone to have a safe and happy Bonfire Night

Now that the evenings are getting darker, and colder, many people are starting to think about Autumnal celebrations like Hallowe'en and Bonfire Night.  While huddling round a blazing bonfire is an important part of the celebrations, and a good way to keep warm, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is reminding everyone that careful consideration needs to be given to what goes on any pyres.

SEPA's launches flood campaign after Scotland's stormy summer

From soggy summers to wet winters, flooding can be a problem in Scotland at any time of the year.  Following on from one of the wettest summers for some parts of Scotland, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is launching its annual flood awareness campaign today (27 October).

Stimulating The Housing Market

The Highland Council is holding a Credit Crunch seminar next week to see what can be done to stimulate the housing market locally and ensure that the Council meets its target for the provision of new private and affordable housing.   The seminar will take place at the Lochardil Hotel, Inverness, on Wednesday 29 October and the Council has invited leading developers, financial institutions, Scottish Government officials and other housing stake holders to join them to discuss the current issues and identify how these can be tackled to create long term sustainability in the market.

Food for Thought at Council Conference

The Highland Council is hosting a conference next month which aims to support and promote the wider use of local food, products and services.   Organised by The Highland Council's Planning and Development Service, the one-day event, entitled Local Food in the Highlands, will take place at the Council Chamber, Glenurquhart Road, Inverness, on Friday 7 November 2008 The conference is targeted at all those involved in making local food available in The Highland Council area - producers, processors, distributors and buyers - and aims to: • bring together those involved in production of local food and its distribution with those involved in public procurement.

Big Hearted Highland Businesses Are Warned About School Scams

The Highland Council is warning Highland businesses not to be duped after complaints that several companies have received bogus high pressure sales telephone calls requesting them to sponsor leaflets, booklets and other materials for their local schools.  They are also advising people that new national regulations have been introduced to protect businesses from misleading advertising by other businesses.

Top Public Conveniences in the Highlands

The Highland Council was singled out for national praise because of the high quality of its 135 public toilets.  At a time when other Councils are closing facilities across the UK, The Highland Council said that it recognises the importance of providing well-maintained and welcoming toilets, especially when it comes to encouraging tourism and are setting aside £300,000 a year for refurbishment and replacement of facilities.
