Council Leaders Seek Urgent Budget Meeting With Deputy First Minister

Following a special meeting on Friday 9th February 2024 Council Leaders are seeking an urgent further meeting with the Deputy First Minister in relation to the Budget settlement for Scottish Local Government, highlighting the dire consequences of the Government's current spending plans on communities throughout Scotland.   Commenting following the meeting the COSLA Resources Spokesperson Councillor Katie Hagmann said: "Leaders were clear today that an urgent meeting with the Deputy First Minister is a priority.

No News Is Good News, As Inflation Remains Unchanged In January, With Food Prices Falling For The First Time Since September 2021

CPI inflation in January remained at its December level of 4.0 per cent - slightly weaker than the 4.1 per cent the Bank of England and financial markets had expected.  This was despite the Ofgem price cap rising in January, which was offset by falling furniture and food prices, the Resolution Foundation said today (Wednesday 14 February 2024).

Shetland Engineering Firm Expands And Creates Jobs

L&M Engineering has secured a grant of £58,914 from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) for the development, which is set to boost business turnover by £1.2m and create two jobs over the next three years.   The company is diversifying its operations to cater for additional aquaculture markets.

NATOs Biggest Exercise Since The Cold War

In late January, NATO began what it has called its "largest military exercise since the Cold War." Steadfast Defender 24 involves 90,000 troops from all 31 alliance members as well as NATO invitee Sweden for four months of manouvers by land, sea, and air.   You have to go all the way back to 1988 for the last NATO exercise that involved more troops: Reforger with 125,000.

Why I Just Pulled Out - Buying A House In 2024

Earlier today I informed my solicitor that I was withdrawing my offer to buy a house, this is the first property I have offered on since the UK house price crash started but following recent events, it probably won't be the last! We had an offer accepted on a property 2 weeks ago and we were very happy with the price that we agreed, however, after visiting the property yesterday we noticed a noise issue that is a deal breaker for us.   The UK housing market is in a very precarious position so it is more important than ever that buyers are confident about the purchase they are making.

Average Weekly Earnings In Great Britain - February 2024

Annual growth in regular earnings (excluding bonuses) was 6.2% in October to December 2023, and annual growth in employees' average total earnings (including bonuses) was 5.8% in October to December 2023.   Annual growth in real terms (adjusted for inflation using the Consumer Prices Index including owner occupiers' housing costs (CPIH)) for total pay rose on the year by 1.4% and for regular pay rose on the year by 1.8% in October to December 2023.

Vacancies And Jobs In The Uk: February 2024

The estimated number of vacancies in November 2023 to January 2024 was 932,000, a decrease of 26,000 from August to October 2023.   Vacancy numbers fell on the quarter for the 19th consecutive period in November 2023 to January 2024, down by 2.7% since August to October 2023, with the estimated number of vacancies falling in 12 of the 18 industry sectors.

Earnings And Employment From Pay As You Earn Real Time Information, Uk - February 2024

Early estimates for January 2024 indicate that the number of payrolled employees rose by 1.4% compared with January 2023, a rise of 413,000 employees.   This annual increase was largest in the health and social work sector, a rise of 217,000 employees.

China's Doom Loop - A Dramatically Smaller (and Older) Population Could Create A Devastating Global Slowdown

China has announced that in 2023 its population declined from 1.4118 to 1.4097 billion people.  Forecasting by the UN suggests China's population will dip to 1.313 billion by 2050 and then down to about 800 million by 2100.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd, (February 7th) sold 738 store cattle, 21 breeding cattle and 167 OTM cattle.   Bullocks (371) averaged 322.0p per kg and sold to 400.0p per kg for a 275kg Limousin cross from Lochbuie, Newtonmore and £2,050 gross for a 815kg Saler cross from Morayscairn, Alves.
