Unique Caithness collaboration will delight both archaeology and gin enthusiasts.   Archaeology and craft gin may seem like worlds apart, but two entrepreneurial companies from the far north of Scotland have teamed up to create a special craft gin, inspired by the prehistoric landscape of Caithness.

Sailing To Success With Serco Northlink Ferries

Serco NorthLink Ferries is proud to support local producers from the Northern Isles as they prepare for this year's Highland Show.   In partnership with producers from Orkney, the Serco NorthLink lifeline ferry transported cheese, baked items, oatcakes, ice creams and of course rum and gin, that will be proudly showcased at the show.

Colleges' Financial Health Improves But Challenges Remain

A deal to harmonise staff pay at a cost of £50m a year will absorb projected savings from the reform of Scotland's colleges, says the Auditor General.   Caroline Gardner's annual report on colleges says the sector reported a very small surplus in its underlying financial position in 2016/17, compared to the previous year's £8m deficit.

Councillor Struan Mackie (Thurso and Caithness West - Ward 2) has stepped down from the North Planning review body citing pressure of work as the reason.   No replacement has yet been announced.

New Venture To Safeguard Unst Partnership's Future

Britain's most northerly community is to become the first to benefit from acquiring a publicly owned asset from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) through an Asset Transfer under the Community Empowerment (Scotland) Act 2015.   The Unst Partnership will purchase and refurbish the building it currently leases from HIE and create a recycling facility and second-hand shop as well as a new part-time post to help run it.

New findings reinforce benefits of renting to families

Homes rented to families take up less management time for landlords.   Homes rented to benefit recipients and migrant workers can take up to six hours more management time per week.

Less Favoured Area Support Scheme Update

2019 support scheme outlined.   Hill farmers and crofters in Scotland's most remote and rural areas will continue to receive support under the Less Favoured Area Support Scheme (LFASS) into 2019.

New community land management scheme launched

Crown Estate Scotland has opened up coastline, seabed and rural estates for local management under a new scheme launched on (20 June 2018).   The Local Pilots Scheme enables community bodies and local authorities to take on land and property to test new and innovative ways of sustainable development.

Digital Development Loan Launched

A £2 million Digital Development Loan has been launched for Scottish companies which want to improve their digital capabilities and processes.   It's open to SMEs which want to develop areas such as cyber security, data analytics and software engineering, and/or increase the digital skills of their staff.

Raising A Tobacco-free Generation

Further actions to stop young people taking up smoking and raise a tobacco-free generation have been outlined.   The Scottish Government's updated Tobacco Control Action Plan sets out 44 specific actions to address health inequalities and cut smoking rates in the communities where people find it most difficult to quit.

Highland toilets to remain open until review complete

The process of carrying out a review of public toilet provision in The Highland Council area is underway and is due for completion by the end of October this year.   Meanwhile, during the summer tourist season Highland Council toilets will remain open until the end of October.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (June, 20th) sold 161 store cattle and 6 adult head of breeding cattle.   Bullocks (87) averaged 233.4p and sold to 284.5p per kg for a pen of 362kg Aberdeen Angus crosses from Calrossie Mains, Nigg, and £1,190.00 gross for a 540kg Limousin cross from Muirton Mains, Urray.

Land Ownership - New register will improve transparency

The first steps are being taken to create a public register of people who ultimately make decisions about how land is used and managed.   The Scottish Government is publishing proposals that will, if agreed, reveal for the first time the controlling interests of land owned by trusts and overseas companies.

Convenience Of Debit Card Payments Puts Cash In Second Place

* At the end of 2017, UK consumers made 13.2 billion debit card payments compared to 13.1 billion cash payments.   * Almost two thirds of Britons now using contactless payments as the number of payments doubles in one year.

Retail Sales, Great Britain: May 2018

In May 2018, the quantity bought in the retail industry increased by 1.3% when compared with April 2018 with growth across all main sectors.   Feedback from retailers suggested that a sustained period of good weather and Royal Wedding celebrations encouraged spending in food and household goods stores in May.

Scottish Crown Estate - Bill to give communities a stronger voice

The Scottish Parliament has approved in principle a bill that will give local authorities and communities the opportunity to directly manage Scottish Crown Estate assets.   The Scottish Crown Estate Bill will establish a framework for changes in the management of these assets to deliver wider benefits and new opportunities for local control, including giving local authorities and communities a stronger voice in the management of Scottish Crown Estate assets.

Funding For Offshore Wind

Up to £2 million of funding to encourage innovation in the offshore wind sector and reduce development costs has been announced by the Scottish Government.   The funding is targeted at supporting innovation across the sector to reduce long-term costs, improving health and safety standards, and widening educational opportunities within the industry.
