Highland Council - Tain & Easter Ross By-election Result - Independent Win

The by-election to elect a councillor to represent Ward 7 - Tain and Easter Ross on The Highland Council has been won by Maureen Ross (Independent) who was one of seven candidates who contested the vacancy.   One of three seats in the Tain and Easter Ross ward became vacant on the resignation of Sarah Rawlings (Scottish Libertal Democrat).

Thousands Of Veteran Cards To Be Rolled Out This Year

Thousands more veterans will receive HM Armed Forces Veteran Cards by the end of the year thanks to a £3 million injection to expand the roll-out to veterans who left service before 2018.   Veterans' Minister Johnny Mercer has visited a MOD printing facility at HMS Sultan in Gosport.

Why Central Banks Should Stop Raising Interest Rates

Mortgage borrowers breathed a sign of relief following a recent pause in the Bank of England's 14-month campaign of base rate hikes.   Led by the US Federal Reserve, many of the world's major central banks, including the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England, have been hiking their main rates of interest for more than a year in a bid to slow rapid price inflation.

This has been the biggest tax-raising parliament since records began, pushing UK tax revenues to historically high levels according to a report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies.   At the time of the last general election, UK tax revenues amounted to around 33% of national income.

£12.5m For Robotics And Automation To Boost Sustainable Farming In England

Innovative projects will receive funding to develop technologies to predict strawberry yield, increase vineyard productivity and optimise harvesting schedules.   Nineteen innovative projects developing automation and robotic technologies will receive a share of £12.5 million in government funding to boost productivity, food security and sustainable farming practices, the Farming Minister Mark Spencer has announced today (28 September).

How The Bank Of England's Interest Rate Hikes Are Filtering Through To Your Finances

The Bank of England has increased interest rates to 5.25%, a level not seen since April 2008 and markedly higher than the all-time lows of 0.1% seen less than two years ago.   In fact, interest rates hovered between 0.1% and 0.75% for the 13 years to May 2022.

Government Steps Up Digital Skills With 2,500 New Tech Recruits

2,500 ambitious tech talents will be recruited into digital roles in government by June 2025 through new apprenticeship and early talent programmes, the Cabinet Office has announced.   Government to recruit 2,500 tech and digital roles via apprenticeships and talent programmes as part of skills drive A new Digital Secondments Programme pilot is now open for applications, bringing in skills from the private sector.

Halkirk In Caithness Acknowledged To Have Slowest Broadband In The UK

The village of Halkirk in the Scottish Highlands has been named the UK's slowest broadband area, with residents receiving average speeds of just 2.8Mb.  This is even slower than outdated 3G mobile data speed, and not enough to watch Netflix reliably.

Transport & Storage Sector Companies' Grim August - 31.5% Report A Slump In Turnover

New Government figures show transport & storage sector companies suffered a significant decrease in turnover in August, compared to July.  Looking ahead to October, more transport and storage companies expect a fall in turnover than predict an increase.
