UK Economy Has The Biggest Fall Since The 2008 Bank Crash

The latest figures form the Office of National Statistics show just how bad the economy has been doing.   UK gross domestic product (GDP) in volume terms was estimated to have fallen by 2.0% in Quarter 1 (Jan to Mar) 2020, the largest fall since Quarter 4 (Oct to Dec) 2008.

Finally Two Derelict Buildings In Wick's High Street To Be Demolished

Two prominent derelict buildings in Wick High Street are to be demolished following decades lying empty.  Numbers 30 and 126 (known locally as Dominoes (the former cinema) and Sloans are to benefit from demolition and site clearance, before ownership is returned to the local community.

Two Dounreay officers recognised and rewarded by Chief Constable

Two officers based at Dounreay received prestigious awards from Chief Constable Simon Chesterman this week in recognition of their long service and good conduct.   Supt Andy Peden, who is Operational Unit Commander (OUC) at Dounreay, received a Certificate of Service, having joined us in 1980.

Go-ahead For Space Hub Sutherland Starts Countdown To Launch Of Orbex Prime From Scotland

The first orbital spaceflight from the United Kingdom has come a step closer following the Highland Council's decision to give the go-ahead for the Space Hub Sutherland spaceport.  Orbex, the UK-based space launch company, has confirmed that Orbex Prime will be the first vertical launch vehicle to fly into orbit from the Space Hub, which will be constructed near Melness on the northern coast of Scotland.

Dounreay Cash Reaches Groups In Need During Coronavirus Lockdown

More than 30 community groups received help from a fund supported by Dounreay and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority during the COVID-19 crisis.   In March 2020, Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd anticipated an upsurge in demand from community organisations for small-scale financial assistance.

Retail expert Dr Gordon Fletcher, of the University of Salford Business School, comments as shopping centre owner Intu falls into administration.   Dr Fletcher said: "Intu's fall into administration will probably be remembered as the biggest corporate failure of the pandemic lockdown.

Highland Businesses Urged To Apply For Support Before Covid-19 Grant Scheme Closes

Highland businesses who may be entitled to grant support to help them as they prepare to safely reopen are being encouraged to apply before new 10 July deadline.   The COVID-19 business grant schemes, which was set up by the Scottish Government to help companies stay in business during the coronavirus crisis, have now paid out over £66,000,000 to almost 6500 Highland businesses.

Council Leader requests meeting on future of Wick Airport

The Leader of The Highland Council has written to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity, Michael Matheson MSP, raising her deepest concerns over Eastern Airways decision to withdraw their Wick - Aberdeen Service.   The decision by Eastern Airways follows Loganair's earlier decision to withdraw its Wick-Edinburgh route, which now leaves Wick John O'Groats Airport with no commercial services operating.

Learning During Lockdown II - the pupil's perspective

Highland Council has produced a new video which shines a spotlight on how children across the region have been able to continue learning during lockdown.   Last month the Council produced a video 'Learning During Lockdown' to highlight how teachers were able to continue to deliver education despite the closure of school across the UK.
