Farming For A Better Climate

A new farmer-led initiative to drive low-carbon, environmentally sustainable farming practices in Scotland has been launched.   Under reforms to the Farming For a Better Climate (FFBC) programme, a new group will be established to trail and develop ideas on farms which could provide practical, innovative solutions to help climate change mitigation.

Provisional Scottish sea fisheries statistics 2018

Latest figures show that in 2018, Scottish-registered fishing vessels landed 445 thousand tonnes of sea fish and shellfish with a value of £572 million.  This represents an decrease of 20 thousand tonnes[1] (4%) and an increase of £12 million (no significant change in real terms[2]) from 2017.

Deposit Return Scheme

Scotland's new Deposit Return Scheme will include aluminium and steel cans as well as drinks containers made of glass and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic with a 20p deposit as part of plans to combat climate change.   The ambitious scheme is based on successful international equivalents and will be widely accessible, with all shops which sell drinks offering deposit refunds to customers.

Police Officer Quarterly Strength Statistics Scotland, 31 March 2019

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published statistics on Police Officer Quarterly Strength, which gives the number of full-time equivalent police officers employed by Police Scotland.   The key findings of the statistics are: There were 17,251 full-time equivalent (FTE) police officers in Scotland on 31 March 2019.

Investing In Communities - New £11.5 Million Fund Open For Applications

Community groups and projects can now apply to the new £11.5 million Investing in Communities Fund to tackle disadvantage, poverty and inequality.   The fund encourages community-led development, design and delivery of sustainable local solutions addressing local issues, circumstances and aspirations - such as supporting out-of-school provision, providing activities and workshops, creating a community cafe and improving job opportunities.

Best Start Grant Applications Flood In

More than 6000 applications for Best Start Grant have been received in just two days following the launch of the Scottish Government's new Early Learning Payment.   The payment is for children aged between two and three and a half and can be used for anything from children’s clothes and shoes to toys, books or days out.

US and UK complete project to remove highly enriched uranium

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority and US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) have completed the transfer of around 700kg of highly enriched uranium (HEU) from Dounreay, in the north of Scotland, to the US.   The HEU transfer, from Dounreay to the United States, was announced by the UK Government as part of its commitment to the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit held in Washington DC.

Brits Urged To Read Travel Advice Ahead Of Bank Holiday Trips

British people planning to use the upcoming Bank Holidays to go abroad are being urged to plan for their trips by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO).   The FCO is using an improved design on its travel advice Twitter and Facebook channels to remind people to prepare themselves before they leave the UK.

May Bank Holiday Mayhem: 22 Breakdowns Per Minute Expected Over The Weekend

161,445 breakdowns expected to occur on UK roads this weekend as drivers head off for the bank holiday weekend.   Green Flag is predicting 22 breakdowns every minute between Friday and Tuesday.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd., (May, 1st) sold 804 store cattle and 53 OTM cattle.   Bullocks (423) averaged 225.8p and sold to 268.8p per kg for a 400kg Limousin cross from Kinchyle Farm, Scaniport and £1,200 gross three times for a 650kg Simmental cross from 17 Englishtonmuir, Bunchrew, a 547kg Charolais cross from Kincraig Farm, Invergordon and a 625kg Limousin cross from Kinchyle Farm.

Credit Union Membership Continues To Increase

The latest quarterly statistics December 2018 issued by the Bank of England show that membership of credit unions continues to increase and now stands at 2,059,827 adult and Junior members.   In 2008 membership was just over 650,000 and the rise in membership is due to range of factors from the banking crisis, reduced interest payments from banks and the slow spread of information about what credit unions do.
