Dounreay Team Begins To Empty Reactor Of Nuclear Material

Work is underway to retrieve the last remaining radioactive fuel elements that have been stuck for decades inside the iconic Dounreay Fast Reactor (DFR).   The experimental dome-shaped nuclear reactor once led the world in fast breeder technology and after it closed in 1977 most of the core fuel was removed.

Recycling For The Future

Projects which are increasing recycling rates, reducing emissions and re-using resources are to receive a share of £8.4 million.   Around £4.2 million will help 17 small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) develop new products which will re-use whisky by-products, waste plastic and household furniture, through the Circular Economy Investment Fund.

Temporary Traffic Lights At Tomnahurich Roundabout, Inverness

Drivers are being advised that on Thursday (28 September 2017) temporary traffic lights will be in position at the A82 approach to Tomnahurich roundabout.   The temporary traffic controls are required to allow for work associated with the new West Link crossing to be carried out and will be operating from 9am until 4pm.

The Highland Council Countryside Rangers have yet again had a busy summer getting people out into the countryside, exploring and enjoying wonderful wildlife and scenery.   Over the summer months the team have put on over 250 events involving over 4000 people.

Scottish Budget Date Announced

The Draft Budget 2018/19 will be published on 14 December, subject to parliamentary approval, as outlined today in a letter to the Finance and Constitution Committee from Finance Secretary Derek Mackay.   In keeping with last year's process, the Budget Bill timetable has been amended to provide additional time for Parliament to scrutinise the budget proposals, which Mr Mackay says demonstrates good governance and partnership working.

Celebrating The Contribution Communities Make To Scotland

Over 250 community leaders from across Scotland will meet in Aviemore today and tomorrow (21-22 September) at a national conference to look at the impact and future role of community-led development on Scotland's social and economic fortunes.   The event, hosted by Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) and supported by the Scottish Government, brings together community groups, academia and experts to discuss the vital contribution communities make to Scotland and consider how to support their continuing and increasing ambitions.

Highland Council joins Scotland's battle to wage war on waste

The Highland Council has signed up to join Recycle Week's army of ambassadors in a bid to get Scotland recycling more.   Recycle Week, which takes place from 25 September to 1 October 2017, is the annual UK-wide campaign to raise awareness of the vital importance of recycling.

The Mess Of Broadband In Highland Highlighted Again

Rhoda Grant MSP challenged the First Minister on the reports that the UK Government has rebuked the Scottish Government for their failure to rollout broadband fast enough.   "Both the UK and Scottish Governments have failed in their delivery of broadband across Scotland, especially in the Highlands and Islands, and now they are squabbling amongst themselves.

Latest Highland & Moray Fisheries Local Action Group funding approvals

Two Highland businesses have successfully secured funding through the Highland & Moray Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) to boost business and create jobs in their local area.   Ullapool based Ockran Oysters Ltd will receive £12,500 to invest in new grading equipment that will allow them to double their oyster production during busy periods while Isle of Ewe Boatyard will invest a similar amount in a new boat cradle and winch to allow the business to cater for larger vessels.

SAC Consulting Calls On Farmers To Take Action Following Wet SummAC

SAC Consulting, part of Scotland's Rural College, is calling on all livestock farmers in areas affected by wet summer weather to plan for the coming winter to ensure adequate feed levels.   Andrew Taylor, based at the SAC Consulting office in Ayr commented, "The poor weather over the past few months has caused many farms to house stock earlier than anticipated.

Team behind multi-million pound Inverness Active Travel project celebrate funding competition success

The team behind the Inverness City Active Travel Network project met up with stakeholders and community representatives in Inverness today (Wednesday 20 September) to celebrate being awarded £6.5M of Community Links PLUS funding following the announcement made by the Minister for Transport and the Islands in Glasgow on Monday.   Highland Council and partners have been able to identify matching investment of over £7M, which includes the West Link active travel infrastructure, Inverness Railway Station cycle parking infrastructure, Safer Routes to School interventions, and smarter travel promotion.

Report highlights threat of marine plastics to seabirds

A new report has highlighted the threat marine plastic pollution poses to seabirds in the northeastern Atlantic region.  Researchers found that, of 34 seabird species investigated, 74% have ingested plastic.
