HIE Team Visits Gills Harbour

TOP-LEVEL HIGHLANDS & ISLANDS ENTERPRISE TEAM VISITS GILLS HARBOUR IN LATE OCTOBER, 2013.   A top-level team from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, the Scottish Government's North of Scotland jobs agency, visited Gills Harbour and were given a tour of its facilities this week (21.10.13) by the office-bearers of its Canisbay community owners, Gills Harbour Ltd (GHL).

Miller Construction Selected As Main Contractor For Wick Schools

Miller Construction has been selected to build a £200m programme of new schools across the north of Scotland.   Projects include: Wick Community Campus, Wick North Primary School and Inverness Royal Academy for The Highland Council; Alford Community Campus for Aberdeenshire Council; Anderson High School and halls of residence for the Shetland Islands Council; plus a number of other school projects that are in development.

The North Highland Initiative (NHI) is calling for quality, as a north Highlands hotel receives an award from the new Taste Our Best Food & Drink Quality Assurance scheme, along with 14 other businesses in the Highlands area.   Forss House, near Thurso has been recognised by Taste Our Best which is designed to acknowledge businesses including hotels, restaurants, cafes, takeaways, visitor attractions and B&Bs that not only offer a quality food & drink experience, but include and promote Scottish produce on their menus to give consumers choice.

Highland Council Leader's bedroom tax plea

The Leader of The Highland Council, Councillor Drew Hendry, has written yet again to the UK Government urging a re-think over its under-occupancy policy, which he says is impacting heavily on the Highlands and in particular remote and rural communities.   In a letter to Lord Freud, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Welfare Reform, the Leader urges the Government to back a recommendation from one of its own committees – the Environment Food and Rural Affairs Committee – to exempt settlements of fewer than 3,000 people.

Council agrees new Council Service structure

Highland Councillors have unanimously accepted changes to the Council’s Service structure to align teams into five Services rather than the current seven, delivering year-on-year savings of £350,000 from 2014/15.   The current seven Services are: Education, Culture and Sport Health and Social Care Finance Chief Executives Service Housing and Property Planning and Development TECS The proposed new Services are:- Children, Education and Adult Services Finance Corporate Development Capital and Development Community Services The changes will be implemented in two phases.
