Council Introduces New Taxi Tariffs.
The Highland Council's TEC Services has approved increased taxi fares following consultation with the trade and public and these will take effect from Monday 18 September.  The Council undertook a review of the maximum level of charges for the hire of taxis or private hires cars fitted with taxi meters in accordance with the requirements of the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982.

SUMMARY The July 2006 unemployment figures were released on 16th August 2006.  During the month, June 2006 to July 2006, the number of people claiming unemployment benefit in Great Britain rose by 0.7%, from 925,466 to 932,191 (6,725 claimants).

Single Fares From Under £40 On New Inverness-benbecula Service
The new direct air link between Inverness and Benbecula will offer single fares from under £40, inclusive of tax, it was announced Highland Airways will launch direct flights between the Highland capital and the Uists on Monday 4 September.   The Inverness-based airline has now placed its new fares on its website booking engine in advance of its enhanced range of services between Inverness and the Western Isles starting next month.  
NUKEM Limited, New Brand, More investment and growth
In Germany on 8 August the sale of RWE Solutions to the global private equity group Advent International was completed.   The deal is effective from 1 April 2006 and includes all the NUKEM Group's international activities.

UKAEA today welcomed the arrival of Britain's first purpose-built nuclear decommissioning test centre.   The T3UK complex, incorporating a research institute of the UHI Millennium Institute, aims to become the country's leading site for trialling the techniques and equipment needed to safely dismantle Britain's nuclear legacy, as well as undertaking test work for the offshore and environmental sectors.

UKAEA APPLIES FOR PLANNING PERMISSION FOR NEXT DECOMMISSIONING PHASE UKAEA is seeking planning permission to commence the construction of new facilities at Dounreay with a combined value in excess of £127 million.  A planning application has been submitted to the Highland Council for the construction of three facilities as outlined in phase one of the Highland Council's Dounreay Planning Framework, which was the subject of public consultation during 2005.

A worldwide search for technology capable of improving UKAEA's detection of radioactive particles on beaches near Dounreay has resulted in four companies being short-listed for the award of a contract to undertake the work.   Four different systems, including an enhanced version of the system currently in use, were selected by a panel of experts after a series of trials to test their performance against the current system.

As young people across the Highlands and Islands anxiously await their exam results, Careers Scotland is urging pupils to remain calm and take advantage of the Exam Results Helpline.   Exam results will be posted throughout Scotland in August, and experts from Careers Scotland will be on standby to reassure callers and provide impartial advice.

Computafix Close Wick Outlet
Computafix has closed their retail outlet in Wick.   This is due to the simple fact that there is insufficient retail business in the Wick area to support a shop dedicated to IT.

Sutherland Venue For Northern Sheep Event

The first annual report on progress to decommission the former experimental reactor site at Dounreay is published today.   Dounreay Review 2005/06 has been produced by UKAEA, the body carrying out the safe clean-up and dismantling of the 140-hectare site.  
North Firm Wins £8M Contract From HIE
NORTH-based consultants Development Partners Ltd has won an £8m contract from Highlands and Islands Enterprise to manage the supply of advice to organisations over the next three-and-a-half-years.   The use of supply partnering for advice provision was introduced in 2003 and its success has led to another round of tendering for the next three-and-a-half year period.
