Royal Mail Announces 6000 Redundancies

Royal Mail has announced plans to make up to 6,000 people redundant by August 2023, blaming ongoing strike action and rising losses at the business.   The postal company said it had begun notifying workers of its plan, which aims to reduce its overall headcount by a total of 10,000..

Cutting Benefits Uprating Would Save £3 Billion But Leave Poorest Families Incomes At Lows Not Seen Since The Turn Of The Century

Uprating benefits in line with earnings next year could save £3 billion.   This would set the typical incomes of the poorest fifth of working-age families back to levels not seen since 2000-01, according to new analysis published (Thursday 13 October 2022) by the Resolution Foundation.

Record Lows In Unemployment And Record Highs In Long-term Sickness Poses Huge Challenge For Policy Makers

A tight labour market has seen pay growth strengthen and unemployment fall to a near-50-year-low.  But the workforce continues to shrink, driven by economic inactivity due to long-term ill-health rising to a record 2.49 million, highlighting the dilemma facing policy makers, the Resolution Foundation said on Tuesday (11 October 2022) in response to the latest ONS labour market statistics.

Quantitative Easing, Monetary Policy Implementation, And The Public Finances

Now interest rates are rising, the interaction of quantitative easing (QE) with the Bank of England's current methods for implementing monetary policy will add to strains on the public finances.   The crux is that QE creates money that goes onto banks' balances (reserves) at the Bank of England, and those reserves are being fully remunerated at the central bank's policy rate (known as Bank Rate).

Pound Rises As Rumours Spread Of Mother Of All U-turns

The Pound has rallied to its highest level in over a month against the Euro while recovering to its highest level in a week against the Dollar, amidst reports the UK government was set to reverse some, or all, of its mini-budget.   When asked by a reporter in Washington if the government was about to u-turn, Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng said "let's see".

Huawei Legal Notices Issued - Legal Notices Issued To 35 Uk Operators As Government Responds To Consultation On Huawei

Huawei technology must be removed from the UK's 5G public networks by the end of 2027 under legal documents handed to broadband and mobile operators today.   The document - called a designated vendor direction - has been sent to 35 UK telecoms network operators.

Highland patients give positive feedback on their GP Practice experiences

The results from the latest Scottish Health and Care Experience (HACE) Survey from Public Health Scotland show large percentages of positive feedback from people in the NHS Highland board area about their experiences at their GP Practices.   The survey was sent to a random sample of the public and covered a number of areas in health and care experience, including treatment and advice from GP Practices, COVID-19 and Out of Hours healthcare.

NHS strike ballot continues despite government talks, says UNISON
