Government in danger of missing clean power target, warns Lords Committee

The House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee has warned the Government that unless it drastically steps up the scale and pace of building more energy generation and network infrastructure.  It is in danger of missing its clean power target of decarbonising the electricity system by at least 95% by 2030.

£2.4 million package to support Gaelic schools and cultural initiatives

A new Gaelic primary school is set to open in Glasgow next year after a £2 million investment from the Scottish Government.   The funding will complete the refurbishment and extension of the former St James' Primary School building to establish Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig a' Challtainn (Calton Gaelic Primary School) which will become the city’s fourth Gaelic language primary.

UK temporarily spared from Donald Trump's 50% steel tariffs | BBC News

The UK has been temporarily spared from US President Donald Trump's executive order doubling steel and aluminium tariffs from 25% to 50%.   The order raises import taxes for US-based firms buying the metals from other countries from Wednesday - but the levy remains at 25% for the UK.

The Sizewell A turbine hall story from construction to demolition

The turbine hall and adjoining structures at Sizewell A former nuclear power station have been safely razed to the ground by Nuclear Restoration Services (NRS).   An area the size of a professional football pitch has been cleared, de-planted and demolished ready for its next use, creating a huge skyline change for the Suffolk coast.

New offence of forcing people to hide objects in their bodies

Children and vulnerable people being criminally exploited by gangs will be better protected under new measures, as part of the government's Plan for Change.   A new criminal offence of ‘coerced internal concealment', to be introduced as an amendment to the landmark Crime and Policing Bill, will crack down on anyone, including gang leaders who force people to hide items inside their bodies to avoid detection.

Continued progress on child mental health waiting times

The national standard on waiting times for children and young people accessing mental health services has been met for the second quarter in row.   Latest Public Health statistics show 91.6% of those referred to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) were seen within 18 weeks from January to March - the Scottish Government standard is 90%.
