£234k Green Jobs Fund Award For New Natural Heritage Facility

A new £5.8m facility to will help more people experience forest restoration, the natural environment and Gaelic culture, has secured up to £234,554 Green Jobs Fund investment.   The Rewilding Centre is being created at Dundreggan Estate near Fort Augustus by conservation, education and research charity, Trees for Life.

Expanding Scotland's Medical Workforce

The Scottish Government has committed £32 million to create a further 139 trainee doctor posts to support services under greatest pressure during the ongoing recovery from COVID-19.   Trainee doctors currently make up 44% of doctors employed by NHS Boards.

HIE Publishes Annual Report For A Year Like No Other

The report shows that Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) activity was dominated by its response to the pandemic, both in supporting hard-hit businesses and communities across the region and in continuing to operate effectively following a sudden switch to home-based working for all its employees.   HIE invested £92.4m in the Highlands and Islands, including £23.7m COVID-19 resilience funding of which £14.9m was additional COVID-19 support funding from Scottish Government.

Coronavirus (covid-19) Latest Insights

Infections in England highest in secondary school-age children 29 October 2021 Overall, coronavirus (COVID-19) infections continued to increase in England in the most recent week, with the percentage testing positive still highest in those in school years 7 to 11 (9.14%).   The percentage of people testing positive also increased in Northern Ireland, and there were early signs of an increase in Scotland.

Scotland's Covid Certificates Accepted By The EU

Scots must update certification status before travelling abroad.   Scotland and the rest of the UK have been formally adopted into the European Union's Digital Covid Certificate (EU DCC) scheme, the European Commission has confirmed.

International Air Travel Has Substantially Decreased Since 2019

The number of people travelling to and from the UK by air has decreased by 97% since the start of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.   The International Passenger Survey (IPS), which collects details from overseas residents leaving the UK, and UK residents returning home, shows overseas residents made 277,000 visits by air to the UK during Quarter 2 (April to June) 2021.

Roll-out Of New Diabetes Test

A simple blood test for people with Type 1 diabetes enabling some patients to stop taking insulin will be rolled out.   Scotland is the first country in the world to introduce this test which will be available from hospital diabetes centres from 1 November.

Coronavirus (covid-19) Deaths Rise In England, Scotland And Northern Ireland

The number of deaths from all causes in the UK in the week ending 15 October 2021 was 12,845, 14.8% above the average for the corresponding week in 2015 to 2019.  Deaths were above the five-year average in all UK countries.

Coronavirus Cases Pass 5 Million Worldwide

The latest up date shows the virus has caused the deaths of 5,007,629 and rising.   USA is still the worst in terms of total numbers at 765,722 UK has one of the highest death rates in Europe at 140,392.

More competition in the food market in Caithness begins on Friday 29th October with the opening of a new Farmfoods shop in Wick.   The new store occupies the one formerly occupied by Poundland and another one next door.

Highland Council Agree Initial Cuts And Increased Charges From Next Year

The Highland Council has approved a number of key recommendations as part of its medium term financial planning approach.   Councillors considered revenue budget projections for the coming financial year, medium term planning for future budgets over the next 5 years and forecasted budget gaps, as well as a number of capital developments and future capital strategy.

Caithness Area Committee of Highland Council To Discuss Parking Charges for Motor Homes

The committee will discuss a paper Visitor Management Car Parking & Motorhome Provision at its online meeting on 3 November 2021.   Initially the charging scheme will be voluntary -As with Council-owned sites, there will be no enforcement of charges until such time in the future that a full common good consultation and Traffic Regulation Order amendment are carried out if so decided.

DINGWALL, Dingwall & Highland Marts Ltd, (October 28th) sold 4,260 store sheep.   Lambs (2,816) averaged £67.74 and sold to £109 gross for a Texel cross lamb from Lochfleet, Dornoch.

Platinum Jubilee Public Holiday On 3 June 2021 Agreed By Highland Council

An additional public holiday on Friday 3 June 2022 has been approved at a meeting of The Highland Council.   The additional public holiday is to commemorate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and 70 years on the throne in line with UK Government arrangements.

New Care Facility for the North Coast agreed

Highland Council members, during their Committee meeting which took place today, considered a detailed appraisal of options for taking forward a new Care Facility for the North Coast, to be located in Tongue.   This built upon the prior commitments to take forward a new Care Facility to replace the existing Melvich and Caladh Sona care homes operated by NHS Highland.
