Earnings and employment from Pay As You Earn Real Time Information, UK: August 2025

Early estimates for July 2025 indicate that the number of payrolled employees was 30.3 million, which is a fall of 0.5% from July 2024; this is equivalent to 164,000 fewer employees.   The largest increase was in the health and social work sector, with a rise of 67,000 employees; the largest decrease was in the accommodation and food service activities sector, with a fall of 108,000 employees.

New help for patients battling obesity through pharmacies and community access

More foreign criminals to be deported before appeals heard

‘Deport Now Appeal Later' scheme nearly trebled to 23 countries, with more to follow in the future.   More foreign criminals will have their appeals heard from abroad, preventing them from gaming the system to delay their deportation from the UK, in the latest step to restore order to the UK's immigration system as part of the Government's Plan for Change.

Impact of Short-Term Let Licensing on Scottish Landlords

Scotland's mandatory short-term let (STL) licensing regime came into force on 1 October 2023.  It requires anyone offering accommodation for non-residential short stays—whether a room, whole home or unconventional unit—to hold a licence from their local authority before accepting bookings or guests.

Why Sky Doesn't Warn Customers of Subscription Increases and Cheaper Contract Options

Sky's standard terms allow mid-contract price rises by inflation (or up to 10% a year) without specifying exact amounts in pounds and pence.   Ofcom's rules only require Sky to notify customers at least 30 days before a rise, not to highlight prospective increases or promote alternative deals.
