Transport & storage companies' staffing costs soar by 35% in 3 months - higher than any other sector

Bombshell new Government figures show transport & storage sector companies (including logistics, parcels and warehousing) have seen their staffing costs spiral by 35.7% in the last three months - the highest increase of any industry.   Increased NI and minimum wage costs, set to kick in this April, will add to the burden, warns the home delivery expert Parcelhero.

Continued funding welcomed for ‘Lifeline' Wick-Aberdeen air service

The Highland Council has today received confirmation from Scottish Government that it will continue to provide funding to the Wick-Aberdeen Public Service Obligation (PSO) into financial year 2025/26.   The funding provided by Scottish Government in 2025/26 will be up to £1 million, as in previous years, and The Highland Council will continue with its own already agreed commitment of £300,000.

GDP monthly estimate UK - January 2025

Monthly real gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have fallen by 0.1% in January 2025, mainly caused by a fall in the production sector, after growth of 0.4% in December 2024.   Real GDP is estimated to have grown by 0.2% in the three months to January 2025, compared with the three months to October 2024, mainly because of growth in the services sector.

New residential rehabilitation service opens

First Minister John Swinney has officially opened the first phase of a new residential rehabilitation service in Aberdeenshire, which will increase capacity in the North East of Scotland.   The 27-bed facility, named Rae House and run by Phoenix Futures, will be followed by a second phase which will consist of 53 units of housing and therapeutic community ‘Dayhab' in Aberdeen City, which in total could provide up to 200 placements a year.

Should seized Russian money be used to help Ukraine?

First uncrewed mine countermeasures vessel delivered to UK Royal Navy, supporting British jobs and boosting British security

British defence jobs have been boosted and British sailors will be better protected following delivery of the first end-to-end autonomous UK mine hunting vessel, known as ‘Ariadne', which will boost as Royal Navy capabilities.   UK's first vessel for detecting and destroying sea mines has been delivered to the Royal Navy.

Robust homelessness prevention measures in Housing Bill

Further measures to prevent people experiencing the trauma of homelessness will be introduced as part of amendments to the Housing (Scotland) Bill.   The Bill currently places a stronger importance on preventing homelessness through ‘ask and act' duties on social landlords and relevant bodies, such as Health Boards, Police Scotland and the Scottish Prison Service, to ask about a person's housing situation as early as they can and act to avoid them becoming homeless wherever possible.

Improving health through innovation

More than £6 million will be invested as part of the Accelerated National Innovations Adoption (ANIA) programme to help people with type 2 Diabetes, stroke patients and babies born with a rare genetic condition.   A national digital intensive weight management programme will support 3,000 people recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
