Government of Canada announces next steps in its response plan to unjustified U.S. tariffs

Department of Finance Canada has issued the following statement.   Canada will not stand by as the United States imposes unjustified and unreasonable tariffs on Canadian goods.

Budget Deals, Budget Revisions, and Budget Pressures

There was a lot of focus this week on the Budget deal struck by the Scottish Government, which will allow the Budget to be supported by the Scottish Green Party and the Scottish Liberal Democrats.   In early January, Anas Sarwar announced that Scottish Labour would abstain on the Budget as the Scottish Government were likely to secure support from the budget from one or other of these parties.

Scottish Household Water Bills to Rise by £44 per year to Fund Essential Investment

The latest closure list announced by Lloyds is 61 Lloyds, 61 Halifax and 14 Bank of Scotland branches between May this year and March 2026.   Wick Bank of Scotland closes in June 2025 as part of an earlier list of closures..

Business demography, quarterly, UK - October to December 2024

The number of businesses added to the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) (business creations) in the UK in Quarter 4 (Oct to Dec) 2024 was 65,450, a fall of 8.5% on Quarter 4 2023.   The number of business creations in Quarter 4 2024 is the lowest since the start of the quarterly data series in Quarter 1 2017.

Trading Standards Cryptocurrency Scams - AI - Average Loss £18,000

As AI technology continues to evolve, there is a rising number of cryptocurrency investment scams.   Between January and June last year, over £1.1million was lost to investment scams in Scotland, with an average of almost £18,000 being lost by each consumer affected.
