Ex-high street chief to keep Britain working with review into business support for disabled and long-term sick

A new "Keep Britain Working" review has been launched today [Friday 24 January 2025] to explore how to urgently support people with long-term illnesses or disabilities back into work, and to stay in work.   Independent review led by former John Lewis boss, Sir Charlie Mayfield, officially underway.

Loan Charge review launched - A Tax Avoidance Scheme Ends

An independent review into the Loan Charge was launched on 23 January 2025.   Ray McCann, former President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, will lead the review Review aims to bring end to the matter for people affected and is expected to conclude in summer 2025 A new independent review into the Loan Charge has today (23 January) been launched by Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, James Murray.

Output volumes fall as cost pressures strengthen - CBI Industrial Trends Survey

Sentiment across the manufacturing sector fell at the fastest pace in over two years in January, according to the Confederation of British Industry's (CBI) latest quarterly Industrial Trends Survey.   Manufacturing output volumes fell over the quarter to January, though less sharply than in the quarter to December.

UK and Sweden partner for neutron science

Science and Technology Facilities Council's ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (ISIS) and Swedish Research Council Vetenskapsrådet (VR) signed an agreement this week to extend their partnership.   The agreement will enable ongoing collaboration between UK and Swedish researchers using neutron methods for materials studies.

Digital driving licence coming this year

The UK government is launching a GOV.UK Wallet and App to simplify access to services and documents like digital driver's licences, alongside reforms to public sector technology to save £45 billion and drive efficiency and growth.   A GOV.UK Wallet will see government-issued documents available on your phone, starting with a Veteran Card and an early version of digital driver's licence later this year.

Eradicating child poverty - Budget will increase provision of wrap-around help for families

Funding for local authorities to test and improve how they deliver wrap-around support for parents and families will be doubled to more than £6 million by the 2025-26 budget, helping expand work towards eradicating child poverty.   The Scottish Government's Fairer Futures Partnerships will help test new approaches and identify lasting solutions rather than quick fixes.
