Bank Rate reduced to 4.5% Announced by Bank of England - 0.25% Reduction

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) sets monetary policy to meet the 2% inflation target, and in a way that helps to sustain growth and employment.  The MPC adopts a medium-term and forward-looking approach to determine the monetary stance required to achieve the inflation target sustainably.

Director jailed for Bounce Back Loan fraud and transferring criminal property.   Arti Deda overstated the turnover of his Knight Workers Limited company to secure two Bounce Back Loans when companies were only entitled to one.

HMRC late payment interest rates to be revised after Bank of England lowers base rate

HMRC interest rates for late payments will be revised following the Bank of England interest rate cut to 4.5%.   The Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee announced on 6 February 2025 to reduce the Bank of England base rate to 4.5% from 4.75%.

Chancellor's hopes of a quick fiscal tonic raised by votes for larger interest rate cuts

Lower-income households likely to be hit hardest from upcoming inflation spike.   The Bank of England's decision to cut interest rates from 4.75 to 4.5 per cent was expected, but two votes for even larger cuts were not.

The WiSA mentoring programme is a 9-month scheme which matches established industry leaders with women in the sector keen to develop and grow their careers.   About the programme Through one-to-one sessions, the mentoring programme will provide training and support for both mentees and mentors.

The impact of an endometriosis diagnosis on monthly employee pay and employee status, England: April 2016 to December 2022

Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological condition that has physical, psychological, social, and economic impacts; however, there has been no population-level analysis of the labour market impacts of this condition in England.   There was a statistically significant average decrease in monthly earnings among women aged 25 to 54 years in England who received a diagnosis of endometriosis between April 2016 and December 2022, from one to five years after diagnosis, compared with the two-year period before being diagnosed with the condition.

New survey suggests benefits system is letting down people with mental health conditions who want to work

New survey suggests 200k people claiming health and disability benefits are ready for work now if the right job or support were available.   Comes as number of young people with a mental health condition who are economically inactive due to long-term sickness reaches over a quarter of a million (270,000).

Scotland and Northern Ireland continued to have the highest rate of alcohol-specific deaths

10,473 deaths from alcohol-specific causes were registered in the UK, the highest number on record, but the rate of alcohol-specific deaths (15.9 per 100,000 people) decreased slightly compared with 2022, (16.6 deaths per 100,000 people).   Age-specific rates decreased for the first time since 2020 for people aged between 25 and 59 years, while rates for those aged 20 to 24 and 60+ years remained similar to 2022.

Deadline approaches for School Age Payment applications - Parents and Carers Don't Miss the Deadline

Parents and carers urged not to miss out on support worth over £300 Parents and carers, with a child born between 1 March 2019 and 29 February 2020, risk missing out on hundreds of pounds worth of help if they don't apply for School Age Payment in time.   The deadline is midnight on 28 February 2025.

Reforming the skills system

Legislation to simplify the funding system for learners at college and university and apprentices in Scotland, has been published.   The Scottish Government has introduced the Tertiary Education and Training Bill to Parliament, which is expected to examine it over the course of this year.
