FCA confiscates over £500,000 from convicted insider dealer

The FCA has secured a confiscation order of £586,711.01 against Mohammed Zina, a convicted insider dealer.   The order must be paid within 3 months, or Mr Zina will face a further 5 years in prison.

Thousands of people top up National Insurance records to maximise State Pensions - £35 million added to State Pension pots

Only two months left to boost State Pension by filling gaps in National Insurance records from 2006 onwards.   Since the launch of the digital service last April, 37,000 people have topped up more than 68,000 years, worth £35 million.

Crackdown on illegal wildlife products at the border

Thousands of unlicensed and illegal wildlife products have been seized by Border Force as part of Operation Thunder.   Operation Thunder is an intensive international operation to target the criminal networks behind wildlife crime, From 11 November to 6 December 2024, Border Force officers taking part in Operation Thunder 24 made 217 seizures of wildlife products which are controlled by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild fauna and flora (CITES).

Deal for Council to take over D&E Coaches completed

Yesterday (Tuesday 4 February) the Leader of The Highland Council Cllr Raymond Bremner along with the Chair of the Economy and Infrastructure Committee Cllr Ken Gowans visited the depot of D&E Coaches.  This followed the completion of the deal for the council to acquire the business.

Director banned for breaching immigration rules.   Qiqing He employed three people who were not allowed to work in the UK at his takeaway in Aberdeen.

Leading egg producer joins the scramble to find some positives for farming

A THIRD-generation egg producer has welcomed some aspects of Defra secretary Steve Reed's so-called "new deal for farmers." .   However, managing director of Farmlay Iain Chapman, stopped short of giving his wholehearted support to the Secretary of State's speech at last month's Oxford Farming Conference.

New Glasgow prison given go-ahead

A new modern prison in Glasgow to replace the 143-year-old HMP Barlinnie has been given the go-ahead - delivering £450 million worth of economic benefits.   With the construction contract now signed, HMP Glasgow will have a capacity of 1,344 - adding 357 more places to the overall prison estate once completed in 2028.

An update on Homelessness Statistics covering 1 April to 30 September 2024 has been released today.   Over that period: There were 20,823 applications for homelessness assistance.

Landing obligation exemption changes in English waters

Marine Management Organisation is advising fishers of forthcoming changes to a number of exemptions to the Landing Obligation in English waters following a scientific review and public consultation.   The Sea Fisheries (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2025 no.92 were laid before parliament at the end of January and will come in to force on February 28 2025.

Trump pauses Mexico tariffs for one month after agreement on border troops

President Donald Trump paused for a month new 25% tariffs on goods entering the United States from Mexico.   Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum agreed to immediately send 10,000 soldiers to her country's border to prevent the trafficking of fentanyl and other drugs.

Project helps to renew interest in low-demand void housing in Caithness

Good progress is being made to create sustainable tenancies in Caithness by enhancing the appeal for re-letting of low-demand void council housing.   The Council's Void-Plus Policy involves improvements being made to voided properties to increase the appeal of these homes.

Inverness Common Good Fund awards for Inverness BID projects

Inverness Councillors have reinforced The Highland Council's partnership working with Inverness BID by approving Inverness Common Good Funding to the organisation for a range of projects.   At the City of Inverness Area Committee today, Members approved 6 grant applications to Inverness BID from the Inverness Common Good Fund 2025/26 budget.

Tariffs On Canada will be paused for 30 days

Trudeau released a statement on X that outlined the broad strokes of the $1.3-billion border plan his government had announced in December, adding that "nearly 10,000 front line personnel are and will be working to protect the border." That mirrors the number of troops Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged to send to the U.S.  border on Monday morning when she announced that she had secured a deal with Trump to delay the tariffs on her country by one month..

China Hits Back With Tariffs On US From 10 February

China's finance ministry has announced 15% tariffs on coal and liquefied natural gas, and 10% on crude oil, farm equipment, large-displacement vehicles and pickup trucks from the US.   China's Commerce Ministry and its Customs Administration said the country is also imposing export controls on tungsten, tellurium, ruthenium, molybdenum and ruthenium-related items to "safeguard national security interests".
