Retail sales heat up

Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium, said: "Retail sales heated up in June, with both food and non-food performing well.  The soaring temperatures increased sales of electric fans while sports and leisure equipment was boosted by both the weather and the start of Wimbledon.

More people than ever are turning to second-hand products, according to the latest survey data by BRC-Opinium.  This is the second year the survey has been conducted, with the proportion of people saying they had either bought or sold second hand items increasing in seven of the ten item categories measured.

Private rent pressures continue to ease, but renters are still suffering a £720 affordability wedge

Growth in private rents continued its recent slowdown, with rents rising by 6.7 per cent in the year to June 2025, down from 7 per cent seen in the year to May.   However, rents have still grown far faster than wages over the past three years and created an affordability wedge for renters as a result, the Resolution Foundation in response to the latest ONS private rents data.

Inflation ticks up to 3.6 per cent, with further rises expected come autumn

CPI inflation exceeded expectations to reach an eighteen-month high of 3.6 per cent in June - 0.2 percentage points higher than expected.  While forecasts from the Bank of England have inflation rising further in the autumn, continuing to weigh down on lower-income households struggling to cope with higher prices, according to the Resolution Foundation this week.

Jobs market continued to weaken, and has shed 143,000 jobs since October

The UK jobs market continues to weaken, with the number of payrolled jobs having fallen by 143,000 since last October, while RF analysis suggests the employment rate has been falling for two years, the Resolution Foundation said on Thursday 17 July 2025.   The number of people in payrolled employment fell by 75,000 in the three months to May, with initial estimates suggesting a further fall of 41,000 in June, although the latest month is often revised.

UK House Price Index for May 2025 - Prices in Highland Up Over 7%

The UK HPI shows house price changes for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.   UK house prices UK house prices rose by 3.9% in the year to May 2025, up from the revised estimate of 3.6% in the 12 months to April 2025.

Overdue invoices top 1.8 million in Scotland as pressure mounts, R3 research shows

The number of overdue invoices on the books of Scottish businesses hit more than 1.8 million in Q2 2025, according to new research from R3, the UK's restructuring, turnaround, and insolvency trade body.   R3’s analysis of data provided by Creditsafe shows there were 1,820,706 overdue invoices on the books of Scottish businesses in Q2 2025 - with 602,822 in April, 589,298 in May, and 628,586 in June.

Latest Unemployment Figures for Scotland March-May 2025 and Latest Pay Levels

Scotland's unemployment rate for individuals aged 16 and over stood at 3.7% between March and May 2025 This is a decline of 0.5 percentage points from the previous quarter and below the UK-wide rate of 4.7%.   Number of Unemployed An estimated 102,000 people aged 16 and over were unemployed in Scotland during this period.
